Well yes I agree. "eating his tea" sounds like a very desperate thing to do. I usually drink mine Tea = Evening meal in the midlands. Oh yes I remember now.

Its just soup (gruel) for me most evenings as I eat at lunchtime and that's not a lot, today it was a piece of tuna and beans. Trying to lose weight but its a slow process as there is a lot of it.

I would recommend Henderson's Relish ... pride of Sheffield.
A gentleman's relish, much better than Worcester sauce in my view.

Rog Yes, the bottle you presented me was excellent thank you, and yes, much better than Worcester sauce. However, nothing beats Maggi, if you've never tried it I'd definitely recommend trying it out, most major supermarkets sell it for a little over a quid. It's like a cross between soy sauce and Marmite.

I was born in Birmingham and lived in Warwickshire until I was 18 and went to Uni. I can assure that under no circumstances would we ever have considered "tea" to be an evening meal. I don't doubt that you called it tea where you were dragged up, but please don't put that onto other Midlands dwellers.

Well. I get up and have my dinner, I then have my lunch at 2am and eat nothing before bed.

My point really is that it’s nothing much to do location, but everything to do with that quaint British concept of “Class”. Yes we were middle class. Maybe you were working class? You think me a snob, I think you an inverted snob. Or we could just consider that these words (eg dinner, tea) don’t have universal meaning.

It is the upper class who don’t have to work. Whilst the working class are down the mines, driving the trucks and doing mindless factory work (because they didn’t pay attention at school or even go to a proper school), the middle class are their bosses, telling them what to do from the comfort of a nice office with an attractive young secretary on their knee taking dick-tation.
