A sadly missed product... Heinz used to sell boil in the tin sponge pud. Everyone thought the tin ought to be pierced, but it actually said in the label not to. The important bit (very important actually) was not allowing the saucepan to boil dry. I suspect one could prove some element of the laws of thermodynamics in this way. I remember having those as a child...with a kitchen full of steam !

But Heinz decided to delete them from the line-up. Miserable gits.

The micowable alternatives are not too bad an option. Certainly safer, but you still have to watch the steam as you open them - otherwise ouchy ouchy...

You must have had the expensive caviar that you serve hot. We just went for the cheap ready-to-eat stuff.

Later taken over by Heinz but never quite as good, and quietly discontinued in the late 1990s.

I remember a school friend whose parents shopped at Marks and Spencer.
I was about 13 and had never been in an M&S but was told they are terribly infra dig. They offered me spotted dick and I felt uneasy as had no idea what it was.
Mum always made our puddings.
They also had the naff formica M&S St Michael trays with flowers on them but now I have several as I get them in charity shops. They are great!

Sotted dick cooked wrapped in a couple of old tea towels and boiled for hours was a favourite treat on an occasional Sunday, add sugar and homemade custard, pure bliss.

Boil in the bag organic caviar on the Aga was always good. Which reminds me, we once had an injured goldfish. Operated on by a local sturgeon.
