This afternoon, we're off to the builders for the handover/run through of "Ellis"...
I want to give the joiner that's been lining her our something to show appreciation of the effort he's put in - during a difficult time as his wife has been having radiotherapy. I did send HER some flowers and chocs a few weeks ago as a thank you for the effort he's been putting in but perhaps some cash for him might be appreciated.
NOT wanting to offend nor chuck away money (we really are close to the wire ) but does 100 quid seem right? - no one ever tips ME for doing my job well but I would like him to have something.

I'm sure he'd be very grateful for that. Our boat was built by a team of around 12, although we had one main joiner working on him. On handover day we bought some beer for everyone and I gave the joiner a bottle of malt (we'd previously established that he liked Scotland and whisky). It seemed to go down very well.

As Nick says. A present goes down better than a small amount of cash. £100 is only a two hour bonus and although a good malt doesn't (necessarily) cost that it's got an air of gratitude. Make sure it's not just a Talisker from Tescos though.

I agree with the others (mostly), I'd recommend a good bottle of Canadian Club Rye Whiskey...aged 12 - 18 years, can't go wrong with that, it's sooooooo smooth. It will cost you a bob or two, but well worth it and will show real thought went into it and not just a normal bottle of single malt you can pick up in your local grocery store. & a card

Being an ex Carpenter and Joiner myself, I would have been extremely pleased with a bottle of something nice, as money tends to get flittered away!

Let's just hope he's not a Muslim! When I lived in Woolwich in the 1980s, there were several Muslims who used to drink in my local. I asked them about this once and they explained that it was not against their religion to drink alcohol, merely to feel its effects.

we've been over today ... and asked the boss man if he's a drinker - apparently he's no longer allowed due to his heart condition... but he IS taking his wife away for a few days in the dales the week after next so I'm going to give him cash in a card and arrange for a lunch at my best friends restaurant up in Carthorpe for them, to be taken whenever they like - I'll settle the bill with her...

i still can't work out why anybody would name a boat after the last woman to be hanged in the UK.

i still can't work out why anybody would name a boat after the last woman to be hanged in the UK. Truthfully, it's my real name (or rather one of them)- I thought of calling it "ginner that dances backwards" but that's a lot of lettering to write!

That's a really good idea, just as well you checked about the drinking. Anyway, at least he won't run up a huge champagne bill at your friend's restaurant. His wife, on the other hand...
