In any case I believe the notion to be that you remove the lid to cook or boil a kettle.

Or could it just be that the central ring is on downside up? V suitable for a clown class boat.
I'll bet there's an indentation for the stove tool on t'top side of the plates.

It's still wrong to have an indentation though. A rectangular hole is more correcter. And as for the @nemesis suggestion it's not necessary to remove the plate for cooking, and if you do it will foul there bottom of the pan badly and cause a lot of soot to get everywhere when washing up

I believe it was Barry Hawkins lad that did most of the woodwork, he has set up shop in the new building on the yard, the old workshop got ripped down some 5 years ago.
Barry still lives on one of his own boats and he has a couple moored in the marina also.
