I've nursed a theory for a long time that Laverda is/was popular in Scotland because it goes well with the accent.

I recall when Ali and I were younger, down in the south of France in one of the marinas watching a guy winch a Harley onto the deck of his yacht. I was a touch envious until I caught him coping a long look at Ali, sat on the back of our Ducati in her tiny shorts and bikini top...might have swapped her for his yacht, but I really hate Harley’s. There's an old joke: "Don't let anyone tell you Harleys are crap. Find out for yourself." Personally I get Harleys, although I've never owned one. The modern iterations are bloated trash-wagons* though, and since they've been very successfully re-marketed as a a luxury status symbol things have got much worse. You don't buy a Harley, you buy a lifestyle (which used to be 'outlaw' but these days it's more 'leather fetishist'). * This was a term first coined by the original 'Frisco Hells's Angels. There's a book by Hunter Thompson, an interesting read. Yes I’ve read that book. I ‘get’ Harley’s as far as owning in the USA. Bit like American cars, ok for long, long straight roads.

Never had a motorcycle but I did have 5 pushbikes in the engine room of my narrow boat at one stage. The main drawback with pedal bikes is that as their name suggests, you have to pedal them, and this requires significantly more effort than buying a gallon of petrol every three months or so. I have always been of the belief that when you are born, you are allocated a certain fixed number of heartbeats and that the secret to a long life is to use these as frugally as possible. Keep up, the lad at the back... Things have moved on, get an ebike.

Used to know a chap who owned a Harley dealership ..... he was always trying to persuade me to buy a Harley and kept lending me ones to try out each time I was talking about a change. The odd thing was he always swapped with my bike for a ride ..... after each test ride on a Harley I then bought an Italian bike (Ducati 450 Mk3D and then a Laverda 750) I have a friend that ran a Triumph/Victory dealership. He often lent me Victory bikes to go play on. Like Harley’s, I found them lacking in handling and performance. Ducati’s were always my favourite bikes, back in the day when my body would fit on one. Nowadays I ride big old Japanese things that mix performance with a more sensible riding position. Bit like my sex life I suppose 😊

Exactly this. Plus I paid £550 for the Clockwork Banana three years ago and now I could sell it in a heartbeat for £900. Plus, it has an unlimited range. Plus it's cool whereas ebikes aren't.

The same gig is described in 'The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test' (Tom Wolfe). Just for a bit more context.

Anybody would think your a bit of a hippy. Just widely-read. TBH I have a fascination with American culture. But I admit things were a bit more lovenpeece in my younger days.

The other day there was a radio prog about the undercover officer who lead the charge in Operation Julie. Mr Stabby didn't get a mention. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0017cfg

Of greater interest is the environment in which LSD was declared an illegal narcotic. A quite similar story to hemp. Not that I am in any way advocating it's consumption.

It's not all about drugs. I don’t know I wasn’t there, I’m too young. The interesting thing about history is that most of it is in the past.
