Last time we came this way (2019) we had a fabulous meal in the Rising Sun at Shackerstone ...a really vibrant, busy but friendly pub with good snap and friendly staff and customers. We were looking forward to going again. Called in at 2.30pm with a view to booking a table. A rather portly, unfriendly lady behind the bar said "We don't do food". That was the extent of the interaction ... so I kept my cash and moved on ... really disappointing. Rog That’s disappointing, it’s one of my favourites. They have struggled with staff/chefs but no excuse for her attitude. I will point this out to the gaffer when I’m back. Enjoy the Globe.

The Rising Sun, Shackerstone:
"Poor service and sad food - The waitress was rude, the burgers were wet, the lasagne was dry and crispy, the nachos had practically no toppings."
"Just returned from having Sunday lunch here and I cannot find a single positive thing to say to recommend it and none of my fellow diners can either. Simply dreadful. To say the food was poor would be an understatement. Undercooked vegetables, burnt Yorkshires and overdone beef. Worse Sunday lunch I can remember. Lousy service, terrible food, no atmosphere. My advice - don’t go there."
"Unwelcoming uninviting staff - the multiple signs we saw for this pub said “food served all day” - when I asked about food the barman told me “no”. We were on holiday and would have loved to stay for more drinks but found the atmosphere and staff uninviting and not friendly."
I just don't understand why people don't read up on these places first and approach them with the proverbial barge pole to hand.

We were disappointed too ianali after our terrific experience in 2019 ... I suppose the last two years and the knock-on staffing issues have caused havoc in the hospitality industry. And it follows on the heels of our terrible meal at the Red Lion, Atherstone too. But undeterred we went to The Globe. I'm pretty sure it's been extensively 'done-up' since our last visit. The food and service was excellent ... we really enjoyed it. The Rising Sun has lost our food and drinks custom now and I'll certainly be recommending the Globe instead. Rog

That's what you get with a brainwashed population running round with their hands in the air telling everyone to Stay At Home and behave as if they're 'infected'.... and not questioning it when the chancellor of the exchequer hands over loads of contracts and free dosh to his mates, bankrupting the country. The Police going round fining everyone who dared to go outside "without good reason" didn't help - the fines are still rolling in from the corrupt judges at the courts. Someone had to pay China for all the face masks and Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Moderna for millions of fake 'vaccines'.
This is the result of believing the lies the Government and the NHS and so-called 'expert virologists' came out with. Well, you got some free jabs, and more to come, so not all bad, eh?

I married a catholic and live under her yoke. A good line for when the J'ovahs or Mormons call, "My wife's Catholic, you don't stand a chance" Last time I saw a Mormon was when a pair knocked on my boat door years ago. Doesn’t seem many around lately.

I have no idea Rog, i know they are building on the old farm as you come out of Nuneaton past the griff arm, but all you can see is a big industrial unit going up, more than likely up for rent soon. On the left also a shed load of new houses! Ive not seen Jane for a while also, the boat always appeared empty when i passed, Her husband was ill, fingers crossed all is good! Haloo... tell him that a stoma is not something to worry about getting reversed in a hurry .... living with one gets easier
I have found that eventually you realise that it isn't an actual problem ..... it's just in your head
Hope you get good news about your Mum

I'll 2nd that - 4 years on, my dad's a new man and regrets fighting it for so long and enduring all the misery beforehand.

New stop gate at the current Ashby terminus by the service block, just after the winding hole. When we first visited here in summer 2005 we winded and moored as you could go no further. Seventeen years later the situation is exactly the same, although there is about 400 yards additional canal now in water even if it's not accessible. Not a complaint, merely an observation that at this rate of work we're not going to be cruising to Measham in our boating life time ☺️ Rog

Have they not dug any more out yet at the next bridge?
Last time we went up there in the boat was xmas 19 i think, met one of the fellas who is on the restoration committee, he reckoned they were aiming to get all the way in 2020, guess Covid paused it but i would expect them to be well on the way now

No. It's in water (and lots of blanket weed) down to the bridge and little winding hole.
We walked into Measham and there are signs of surveying going on along the route.
I know they had a minor breach to repair, and obviously they've built the concrete stop gates too.

I bet CRT made them build that after the breach. Shame, hopefully ill get to go up there one day, be nice to hire the day boat from Ashby boats and take a trip up when done.
