It's often said that boating as a hobby keeps you fit. I've never really agreed based largely on the size and shape of some who tell me this. But I accept any activity is better than none. Jane's gone off for a run and I'm doing my exercises and I was idly wondering if anyone else does any form of exercise to keep joints moving and muscles working ? I've often passed boats with weights in the well deck, so I guess some do. SInce being banned from running I endeavour to do a minimum of 10'000 steps a day as my main activity. I know Clinton Cool used his kayak primarily to keep fit. Rog

I suspect typing on a keyboard is the most exercise many on here get. Followed by lifting heavy glasses.π

I walk many miles daily.. I scramble over rocks whenever I can and climb those trees that call out to be climbed When with the grandkids I've been on scooters, scaled cargo nets and climbing frames etc I like to think I can still keep up, that age hasn't curtailed what I like doing No where near as fit.. I don't run.. always hated it.. don't cycle.. hate that Love dancing and I can rock n roll, jive, cha cha, waltz etc etc I think I'm doing OK... I'll know I'm 'old' when I cannot get to the far end of the Worms Head

1) It's often said that boating as a hobby keeps you fit. I've never really agreed based largely on the size and shape of some who tell me this. But I accept any activity is better than none. 2) Jane's gone off for a run and I'm doing my exercises and I was idly wondering if anyone else does any form of exercise to keep joints moving and muscles working ? 3) I've often passed boats with weights in the well deck, so I guess some do. 4) SInce being banned from running I endeavour to do a minimum of 10'000 steps a day as my main activity. 5) I know Clinton Cool used his kayak primarily to keep fit. Rog This statement is a complete and total fabrication. and requires a full rebuttal.
1) It may have been true once upon a time but by the introduction of Vlockies, CRT have ensured that boaters have as little to do as possible thus increasing the chances of their prompt demise from heart attacks etc (further encouraged by having more than one price increase per year)
This will allow CRT to rid itself of the onerus task of dealing with .... that type of person and allowing them to concentrate on their core responsibilitis of conservation of wildlife, pondlife (aka maggot drowners) ducks and lycra lunatics
2) Pint glasses are specifically designed with an ergonomic shape that encourages stamina and muscle growth in the important drinking arm
3) this is because narrowboats are, like many of their owners, light in the head and heavy in the arse
4) before making such bold claims on it being excercise for excercise sake, one should deduct the number of steps to and from the pub.
5) there is always one in every group

I shed nearly two stone over just a few weeks. Combination of the aerobic excercise and walking contributed significantly, boating is great for keeping fit and the weight down. Caravanning less so.

I'd certainly agree if you're on a mission , doing eight hours a day or more.
But I'm afraid our style of boating tends to be a couple of hours, three on a long day.
And we rather like beer and pies and cake π

Im not really exercising more than I used to just walking the dog as normal. But I really needed to lose the Lbs. though.
