I like marine fish, not freshwater fish which is like eating cotton wool with needles in. Don't do any fishing, when I see anglers along the canal with all the kit they have I think that must be a lot of money to spend just to look as miserable as fuck all day.

Must admit I'm a fair weather fisherman. Winter up here see's an influx of nutters in survival suits fishing for cod, sod that.

Fishing should be done with the aim of catching one's tea.
I dont 'get' any other reason for doing it.
Accordingly over the years I have done a bit of offshore and off pier fishing.
There are some good spots around the Yorkshire coast where I live but havent done it for a few years now.
The pickings out of Mevagissey last week were reported as being 'meagre' so we didnt bother with booking a mackerel fishing trip this time.

Yars ago my dear mother interacted with an angler on the towpath on a rainy day in autumn. "Nice day for fishing" was her cheerful comment. It was a shit day for doing anything other than taking the dogs out for a crap. "Nice day for getting away from the wife" was the angler's response. I do wonder sometimes if it is all about the fish. It probably isn't.

Are you sure it was a sea bass? It was in the sea.

Never done it before and it was fun. I saw a massive tuna but they weren't licensed to catch them, they are now and a few got caught.

I was doing the "Tuna are really big fish" thing with the girls the other day. The older one won't eat anything which had a face but the younger one really likes tinned tuna.
I have warned the older offspring unit about the vegan bullshit situation so I do have my fingers crossed.

I used to fish for Spanish Mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) when I was a lot younger, although the boats I worked on were at not as well organised as the "Wild Card" it certainly was a great buzz.

Perch is nice to eat. If I could be confident about catching perch I would do some fishing.

I have a good friend who also has a narrow boat, and he is a very keen angler.
He's travelled the world fishing and has an incredible photo album of species he has caught (and returned to the water).
He can catch fish in a wet hanky !
He caught a huge zanda on the Stratford canal below Lowsenford and then cooked fillets from it for us.
It was delicious but I suspect that was more to do with his excellent cooking than the quality and taste of the fish.
He also routinely uses pots to catch the invasive American Red claw crayfish and has prepared them and fed us as a starter to a meal. Very nice too.
He also directed me in preparing and cooking an eel for eating. Again it tasted very good, but I suspect due to the flavourings we used. Heading and skinning the eel was quite a chore and certainly not worth repeating in my view.
