Yars ago when I was young free single and rich tall dark and handsome with the perfect life we moored near Oxford on the Thames and had about 80 crayfish out. Using a tesco shopping basket with disposable barbecue lids cabletied to the top, gap for the critters and tins of cheap cat food stabbed with a knife.
There were loads of them I also used to get them in scaffold tubes hauled out with the magnet.
I think it was the crayfish (red ones) which caused the towpath to collapse between Rainbow bridge(Bossoms boatyard) down towards the entrance to the sheepwash channel.
Lots and lots of the blighters. Lots
My mum did a curry but I can't eat shellfish. It was delicious according to guests. She was a cordon bleu trained cook so not all about the mini-lobsters.
I was told that some restaurants were selling the big ones as small lobsters but don't think one could get away with that !

When we were on the K&A about ten or so years ago I got chatting to a chap who was licensed to catch them as a commercial business and sold them to local restaurants.
He had loads and loads of pots out and 'fished' various stretches in rotation.
We saw him near Burghfield but I believe he went as far as Pewsey.

There was a geyser on a narrow boat around Abingdon doing the same. A dory with small outboard to deploy and recover the pots. Apparently the EA will issue the license for free but they do want you to be licensed. I expect bodger will know if the said geyser is still operating. For the first time in yars I didn't get up river this summer. CBA and the small craft have been too tempting.

I think the large signal crayfish hoards have died down a bit. Overpopulation then population crash. They are still there, but not in the huge quantities that they where. I know some one who caught some nice ones in Nottingham canal Last year. He cooked them with garlic and ginger, apparently they where very nice.

I've seen Signal Crayfish round here and down the Calder. I have picked up a couple of the creels along the way but not used them yet. One is supposed to get a licence for a specific area or place, that's no good for a travelling boater who might catch them ad hoc along the way. But who's going to spot a creel line dropped on the offside of a moored boat?

But who's going to spot a creel line dropped on the offside of a moored boat? There will always be someone to spot this sort of thing. Its rather like going to a park on a warm summer's day with a twelve bore side by side and blasting pigeons out of the trees. Someone.Will.See you.

From the polling results I see we have a large group of people who rely on shops for their food products and a similarly large group (extrapolated) who like chopping the fish up with the propeller.
I feel that if these two could be combined and extrapolated out it would be quite an interesting situation.
Some rebellious intent but a lid is being kept on it.

The thought of eating anything that has been living in the filthy ditches is a bit abhorrent. I won't even water my tomatoes and lettuce with water from the canals.

After a while cannibalism kicked in. It was quite interesting to watch. I think you need a large container. I did have an old bath out with the magnet that day but it was holy.

You just put a little water in the bucket and swish it around and then empty the water. Repeat this until the water is clear. If you have to store them, just put a little bit of water in the bottom of the bucket.

Nothing worse than eating drowned crabs.
