I still think a shortened spits or péniche would make a superb cruising home on the Thames. I did spot a couple on the way down today around Chelski. It used to be called Chelsea until the Russian privatisation thieves bought it all. Anyway When I go up back next week I'll try and get pictures. Of the shortened euro barges. If the shortening is well done, which often isn't the case, to avoid a hump when looking at the side of the barge, then it could look reasonably good.
Next time you're in France and close to Paris, you should have a look at St.Cloud where there are a bunch of shortened 38m moored at the Port de la Passerrelle de l'Avre, that I wrote about in an earlier message, around the time Kris posted the Patricia.

Might have had this one before. I passed it the other day and it got me thinking are there any other shortened northern barges about ? Or is it a tug. I'm pretty sure its a shortened big boat*. Looks quite nice and an interesting way to preserve a large boat at least in part. www.riverhomes.co.uk/properties/10957881/sales* eta yes it is Was this one. Now its 50ft long

Would make a lovely boat for the Thames - only question would be would the shortening cause it to handle badly.

I think it would look better if it was a little bit longer, maybe another 10'.

I agree - it does seem an odd length I wonder if it was specifically made for a particular length mooring. 60ft would make no difference to where it could go and it would definitely look better and probably handle better as well

Heres another shortened Humber keel, barges.apolloduck.co.uk/boat.phtml?id=565068. Whilst it's not my kind of boat, it has been done well. The proportions just look "right" to me compared to the shorter one you posted a link to.

For me the longer the barge is, the easier the steering will be, with an extremely short barge like this one, the slightest moment of inattention and the barge may already have changed course completely.
But for thight manoeuvring with a short boat, you'll be able to do the most amazing tricks, using the paddlewheel affect which will be very strong on such a short boat.

One of the better looking shortened Humber Keels that's moored (if it hasn't changed places) close to magnetman is "Onward"

I think ONWARD is in france now peter. Thanks for that info.
Haven't seen or heard anyone talking about "Onward" overhere yet.
I'll keep my eyes and ears open wide, and keep on reading blogs of other UK barges that are touring in France, as they may have seen, or will see it at some stage, before I have that chance.

Owners told me they were going to france and it disappeared from Limehouse a year or more ago. Nice boat with sensibly positioned portholes Of course telling someone you are going to France is not the same as doing it - as I know myself !!

I didn't talk about "Onward" to say that it is (or was) for sale, but only as an 'not too bad' example of a shortened Humber Keel.4
But I do remember it being for sale a couple of years ago in an Apolloduck ad.

I know you weren't suggesting it was for sale peter. I just put my own disclaimer in as this is a thread about boats for sale and I didn't want to raise anyone's expectations.
It was for sale for about £150k with a mooring in Surrey somewhere around Windsor, then turned up in Limehouse where their mooring has been sublet while they do some French things. Apparently.
Its a nice boat. Lister JP3 I think which is quite an appropriate unit for it. Could be a JP4,
