I know you weren't suggesting it was for sale peter. I just put my own disclaimer in as this is a thread about boats for sale and I didn't want to raise anyone's expectations. It was for sale for about £150k with a mooring in Surrey somewhere around Windsor, then turned up in Limehouse where their mooring has been sublet while they do some French things. Apparently. Its a nice boat. Lister JP3 I think which is quite an appropriate unit for it. Could be a JP4, This is what it says about the barge in the National Historic Ships listing about the engine, but that could of course have changed between then and now.
History Significance
Humber Keels are a uniquely British boat with not too many left afloat. They were workhorses and a lot were left to rot at the end of their working life. Their design is reputed to be based on the viking longboat.
ONWARD was taken out of service in in 1995 and cut and shut from 65 feet to 50 feet. The inside was converted by a master carpenter to accommodate his family of four. The wheelhouse, steering mechanism, tiller and engine room are all original including the hand crank Lister JP3. The vessel was used as a static houseboat. The current owner has serviced the engine and restored the engine room and brought her back to cruising standard. She has been overplated from the waterline down, and repainted. Key dates
1954- Started working 1955- Original Captain Herbert Moxon 1995- Converted to houseboat

But in that particular boat one has to stand up to see out. It is well known in the more well to do boating circles that it is shocking bad form to stand up in a boat So it is therefore essential to be able to see out while in a sedentary or relaxed position on the chaise longue When I get hold of LAKE I will pursue the mirrors option. LAKE is registered as 4.26m beam (14ft) and I have it on very good authority (as in Very Good - someone who has been active in petitioning and putting forward costed suggestions for modifying Watford and Foxton to wide beam by using modern inclined planes), that my area of the GU (Ricky to Brentford) is passable by vessels up to 4.34m beam which is another 3 inches. Subject to some bridge height restrictions which don't appear to be a problem with LAKE due to wide side decks and cabin profile. 3 inches makes all the difference at least this is what my other half used to tell me !

Don't you mean if you get lake? I'd go and measure it myself, just to make sure.

That's good - should get a wider audience that way. ebay is a bit iffy for boat sales.
Owner tells me if he doesn't get the reserve on ebay he won't sell it. Fair enough.
Would be nice if whoever gets it treats it well and doesn't butcher it. Or even better the current owner carries on with it - it looks like some effort and planning has gone into it and if that were to continue it could end up being a stunning boat to live on.
Big project though..

Big project though.. I agree it's got the makings of a stunning boat, but if he won't sell it for less than £38,000 I think he will hanging onto it for a while. Did he say if the engine is installed or not? I think you would probably be better off with the one that's "identical" in Surrey. If it's for sale it will be cheaper I reckon.

Engine installed I believe yes. The very very very similar one in surrey - if it does come up for sale - might well be asking quite a lot because I am pretty sure it has been used residentially for at least a decade or two so it is probably fitted out. Obviously this can be a disadvantage but I suspect it may be more generally "sorted" than LAKE. Of course a 20-30 year old interior could be problematic. I'm planning to be up there on Monday morning on the yot so I might look out for life aboard and be nosy And will try to get more pics to help you with your denial that it is the same boat builder who hammered all those rivets

Could it be that the owners of the boat managed to get a temporary autorisation to have a second boat there for the time they need to fit it out, and then get rid of their old boat without the mooring ?
Peter.

That's what I think has happened. A39 is at the same yard. Completely hidden except the bows. I had a look at it appears there have been some works starboard side near the bows as there is some new paint. Strangely it was red oxide paint which is a bit unusual for a hull section. ------ yes it was the same builder I have always had good observation skills ------

This is what I was thinking Peter, it does look like it's been neglected.

Its a lovely boat. I'm 97.3% sure it was built by the same yard as LAKE and I will make an effort to get some decent close up pictures.
Beautiful item. Really

I'll go really close and take pictures on monday morning. I'll wear my "look I have lots of money" Gucci pyjamas and ask if they want to sell the boat for cash. As is where is sold as seen etc. Its a lovely boat. The best looking barge I have seen in 25 years living on English waterways. Beautiful. Lovely.

It does look like it was built by the same yard, but we need more photos to confirm. It would be really good to find out its name then Pluto might have some info for us.
