That's an idea. I had been thinking about buying a small french village. Probably a better investment to chuck it in the cut though ! It will be more economical too, as you don't even have to go all the way to frog country Peter.

That's helpful. Another point is that if I did attempt to purchase a village it would probably still have some residents and from what I could gather from my visit last summer there is a good reason the houses are so cheap. Its because the neighbours are psychopaths.

56x12 modern (post y2000) English barge project for under 50k. Square stern is somewhat displeasing but still quite an interesting boat with an interesting price. Asking £48k Looks OK from the front. If it had a round stern it would be a lot nicer. Not sure why they call it a Thames barge I guess it must be because of the flat stern. Gardner 6LX in there but why they think a 6LX is "worth 12k" I don't know. m.apolloduck.com/boat/barges-thames/591276

Interesting project! Looks like some decent kit with it.

This "About Time" could be made into a nice boat with a bit of time and effort.
The price seems quite reasonnable, the Gardner is a great engine, but if they think that it's worth £ 12k, they can remove it and sell it for £ 12k less, as a small boat like that doesn't need so much power, and an engine that will rarely have to run faster than fast idle on the canals won't like that much.
It seems to be very popular to highly overpower boats, I don't know why, and I think that it's madness.
The builder has wasted some time making the halfround steel artwork, that I personally don't like at all, and that's my reason for not getting in touch with the seller, I won't buy only because of this (and the minor detail that I haven't got the money anyway).
Peter.

Forward visibility is a bit awkward for midgets. As for the engine you could get a new unit for that money something like a Beta 85 or if you wanted traditional you could ask kris to look for a proper Gardner like a 4LW. I'd probably go for a new unit myself. Being a modern boat an old engine would not really be in keeping so unless it was significantly cheaper new is the way to go. I guess they may have got the 6LX quite cheap (as they are quite cheap) and also this boat has high side decks so I wonder if the intention was to use it as a coastal vessel rather than a canal barge.

You may be most surprised to find out how inventive midgets are to be able to do many things just like "normal" people . And while doing so, they rarely hit their heads. Peter.

It's the square stern that would put me off

I think its a complete waste of time. Same sort of embellishment is shown around the whoresholes at the front.

I suppose one way to make use of the fact it has a square stern would be to have davits and hang a nice dinghy off the back. That would improve the look and its always good to carry a decent dinghy.
And it has occurred to me that the roof of the stern cabin, due to being square, might provide enough space for a very small car. Possibly ?

I think its a complete waste of time. Same sort of embellishment is shown around the whoresholes at the front. Even if this is far from the pretty shape of the stern from "DB Elisabeth", it would be much nicer without these "embellishments", and I simply can't understand how anyone could be willing to waste time on useless ugly stuff like that. If they wouldn't have wasted their time with this rubbish, the boat could have been finished inside. Peter.
