I guess this is the 1926 boat they originally thought it was. www.binnenvaart.eu/sleepvrachtschip/34766-vriendschap.htmlBut as you say it was once a dumb barge then it is presumably older and as Kris said possibly not a german power unit. I think its got a MAN or an MWM in there as I have a vague recollection of former owner mentioning it. Not sure though as I also recall seeing rudders so memory must be not 100%..

Its very cheap to change your name in the UK. £36. I have actually been considering changing my surname for personal reasons. Saxe Coberg Gothe is going spare. It will be Bennett actually.

We had a weirdo student lodger in the 90s called Liam Andrews. He changed his name by deed poll (ie properly) to Alexis Romanov. Weird bugger he was always stinking of vanilla perfume. Young bloke under 20. High church and could not handle the idea women could be vicars.

Out of curiosity, looked up Gordon Bennett, which I thought referred to the goalkeeper, not so;
interjection: Expressing surprise, puzzlement, incredulity, annoyance, etc. ETYMOLOGY: The expression is primarily used in the UK even though Gordon Bennett was an American. It comes from the name of newspaperman James Gordon Bennett, Jr. (1841-1918). A.Word.A.Day --Gordon Bennett - Wordsmith.org

As the owners write on their web-site the former owners name was "Van der Veen", and they worked that barge for 50 years. On the "Vriendschap" you just listed there's a long list with owners names, and never the name "Van der Veen" showes up. "Vriendschap" isn't a rare name, it's almost like the family name of "Smith" in the UK, of which I happen to know several, but they're no family of one and other. Peter.

that is why I thought it may be a different boat - because there are so many boats with that name.
Not that it matters. (Remaining text removed as too boring)

Actually thinking about it this Vriendschap boat would go through the teddington barge lock with tug, or the launch lock but without the tug. so... it might be suitable as a boat of multiple occupancy rental rooms in the area around Kingston on Thames. Good square metre floor space certainly.. There have been one or two, three or maybe 4 others (smaller boats but size is not that important as long as it fits in the locks) up there without moorings for quite some years now so the business model is viable. Rather interestingly it would also fit through Molesey lock - complete with tug. Molesey lock chamber is approx is 7.5x80m. Maybe NigelMoore could comment on the legal niceties of my new business plan.

Could make a pretty wicked dry dock with that boat. One for naughtyfox. MoT bay style dry dock. Accommodates 4 narrow boats at a time. Open bow doors, Sink the boat (controlled) bring narrow boats in to covered dock pump out water get the pressure washing and painting done by the Romanians who sleep in bunks in the existing skippers cabin at the back of the boat. In and out in a day or two. Sorted. 7m wide would mean you could put two narrow boats beside each other with 1 metre between each boat and the hull sides. Enough room to get around and to the jobs if it was arranged properly. Total vessel length 50m. Say 10m for the stern cabin leaves 40m so realistically that's 30m so a couple of 50 footers or a 70 and a 30. Could be arranged .

Well young Andrew/Thomas Bennett, I see that you've been calculating, but maybe not enough, as it will cost you quite a bit before you can use the barge as a floating drydock. You would have to measure the hold lenght after the bow has been cut of to see how much useful space is left for this project. One thing that often comes up with boats in a drydock is that there may be a lot more work on the boats than originally planned, and so 3 boats could be ready for re-launching while one still has to get some new plating done, and then they all have to wait, which isn't very good. If you make some calculations how much you'll have to invest to make it work, and how long you'll have to work the thing before it's making any money, you may find that you can make a lot more, and possibly easier money by making accomodation to house people, as there will be a huge demand for that sort of thing, and that doesn't require all that expensive work to convert into a drydock. Peter.

Yes it would make a good multiple accommodation vessel as I suggested earlier As for the dry dock it would be for cosmetic work (blacking) nothing else. In and out. You would only have to cut a narrow boat shaped hole in the bows not remove the whole lot. Once far enough down boats could be hauled in and moved into position quite easily.

I think the multiple accomadation boat is the one. So when are you buying it? You know the bussines model works. You could own a few of them before long.
