The Dutch have considerably more interesting sounding names for boat types than we get in England. Eta the barge in your link is apparently 8.25m wide ! I think this could be a typo. How right you were Andrew (Thomas), but there were 2 typos, in another historic story on a dutch bargees forum I found some more info about this barge written bij one of it's ex-owners who knew more about this barge than anyone else on this dutch forum. He wrote ;"Rijnklippr ARMAND eign Fam van der WIELEN. Geb in 1889 bij J EN K. Smit te Kinderdijk L 53 Br 8.19 Dpg 1.84 . 503 ton. inclusief een bij geleverde ijzeren ruimladder. volgens overlevering tegen een bouwsom FL . 8800.- This barge was built as a Rhine-klipper and was build for the sum of 8800,- Dutch Guilders in 1889 complete with the ladder to get into the hold. It was a sailing klipper with leeboards a long long time ago, build to trade on the Rhine and the bigger Dutch rivers. The last owner, the one who sold it to Poland renamed the barge "ALRINA" the name that it still has. Here is another link to some info, but again with the 2 typos saying 8.25 instead of 8.19, no wonder that that confused you, as it's quite a difference. www.debinnenvaart.nl/schip_detail/8566/ On the photos in this link you can still see the klipper bow. Peter.

Nice hull but the superstructure on it spoils the whole thing.

I quite like it. As a boat for the river. Obviously not suitable for canals but the living accommodation provides some very nice views of the surroundings which I something I set great store by.

I'm not surprised that you like this old klipper, only the exellent forward visibility must have been enough to convince you . Peter.

It would be easy to see the twat rowers plus give this two scanias some oil and I think its the sort of boat people get out of the way of.

Its the style of boat I could deal with retiring on, on the Thames.
I also like the Dutch kotters a lot.

Nice hull but the superstructure on it spoils the whole thing. I'm not too sure that I agree Kris ....if you get away from a "barge should look like a barge" in the water I think it would look like a fairly decent steel cruiser. Like you, I like old boats to look like what they were ...... however I wouldn't call this an ugly boat

Beauty is definately in the eye of the beholder, but it's another boat I won't be buying.

There's one thing I don't understand (among many others), in a very recent posting you made you wrote that you retired at the age of 18, and now you say that you could deal with retiring on this style of boat. I know that I'm not very bright, but this is something I really don't understand. Peter.
