doubled, part replated, part insert.
She was doubled along the waterline, there she had some very large very deep pits but was watertight. She was lapstrake with the waterline strake inset. this meant that the doubler sat inbetween the top and bottom strake and was continuously welded top and bottom. because that filled in the inset it just looks as if she was carvel. Almost all the other sections were replated or if the damage was localised, an insert.
On big old barges another big advantage of doubling which is often a disadvantage on a modern narrow boat is the weight.
If Sabina had been doubled along the bottom with 20mm plate that would have taken her down about 3 inches and I would be able to get under Heck Bridge Doubling I get, but what's the difference between 'replate' and 'insert'? Please also clarify the term 'lapstrake'. Insert is when you cut out a small damaged area of a plate, back to solid then shape and fit a new piece of plate into the hole and weld it both sides.
Replate is when you strip off the whole of the original plate (or several) leaving only the frames and then weld in complete new plate sections onto the frames.
a matter of degree rather than anything else.
Lapstrake is another name for clinker. On a rivetted steel/iron boat one style of construction is when the plates overlap vertically but don't horizontally, being joined instead by butt straps.
Sabina is built with three strakes, the bottom strake is rivetted on to the rolled bilge plates with a nominal 6 inch overlap with a double row of rivets, the strake is made up of plates approx 30 inches high.
The middle strake is again made up of 30 inch high plates again with a nominal 6 inch overlap and a double row of rivets on the inside of the bottom strake.
The top strake again a nominal 30 inch height overlapped by 6 inches on the outside of the middle strake with a double row of rivets terminating on a large angle iron with its edge up and a single row of rivets, the other edge being the deck support.
this gives a depth of hull of approaching 7 foot but varying along the hull due to the sheer.
Another unusual feature is that the rivets are cone head rivets locating into countersinks in the outside so there are no protruding rivet heads and she has a smooth profile.
This has the advantage that it makes the welded sections of the hull slightly less noteceable against the rivetted sections
there you are explained in probably more detail than you wanted
