I do know what you have written is correct.
I understand why NBTA exist but my personal view (everyone is entitled to a view) is that they are campaigning for 'rights' which don't actually exist and there is a risk that the wrong outcomes occur.
Maybe not.
I would be interested to have some statistics about people who are 'defending a way of life' around how long they have been living on boats v their age.
When does it become 'a way of life'? Do tou have to have spent half your life living on a boat? A quarter? 18 months?
People arrr basically attracted to canal boats because it is so cheap. Its nothing to do with 'way of life' it is just an economic anomaly.
You could argue that someone who has lived on boats for their entire adult life with no other housing options available to them may have a 'way of life' but I don't buy into the theory that someone who bought a boat as an adult a few yars ago has a way of life. They don't. They are just seeking a cheap residence.
In itself this should not be demonised but it is worth knowing what the motivations are.

Interesting piece on the kanda website about this exact area. It seems like they don't want the CRT asking them to remove possessions from the land. Perhaps it only applies to people who have moorings if you are squatting you should be allowed to make the place into a rubbish bin. Its a right ! There is an awful lot of entitlement going on there. kanda.boatingcommunity.org.uk/category/crt/crt-policy-news/That particular piece shows them up too much. No Normal Person would think it is acceptable to pile endless amounts of shite on what is in fact a public footpath.

Whilst undoubtedly there are some “ right on,” boaters these tend to congregate down south. So you have probably had an over exsposure to them. A few have ventured north of watford but not that many. So the situation around the rest of the country is a bit different. There are lots of ageing boaters who due to illness come onto crts radar. They do not get treated kindly unless they can stand up for themselves or get someone to advocate for them. There are undoubtedly some economic migrants to boats, but I suspect the majority of these are in London because of the unique housing situation in London. That’s kind of putting it politely. I should say because the goverment has allowed the London property market to be used by all the illegal dubious money in the world, to cleanse its self and make a return on the investment. To the detriment of the housing prospects of the local population. But the rest of the country isn’t quite the same. Apart from someone in your situation I can’t see why anybody would want to buy a boat and live in London. Other than to escape the stupid housing market. I think your partner was lucky to get housed, because a lot of the councils send people to Birmingham I believe. Anyway basically what I’m saying the views you hold might be colored by your experience in the capital and don’t hold for the rest of the country.

Its good if the CRT keep their towpaths tidy. Obviously nobody would object to a pot of nasturtiums but the nature of having things on the land means you just have to say nothing allowed or problems start happening. Less serious on non public land but still zero tolerance is needed. Some people (a minority) will significantly degrade the land for some reason. There is a bloke up near Marlow who has two small boats in different locations and both boats are surrounded by shite. Old pallets, blocks of foam random clothing etc. Its really bad and he's only been there a few months. One major problem is other people end up bringing stuff and it turns into a proper dump. Bad news. Bound to happen if the land owner isn't onto it fast. Got the same problem at Eastwood visitor moorings! overstayers leaving shit everywhere, now moved to waddingtons because she was in danger of losing her boat and she has created a tip there as well!!

Latest news, George has to find 32k or his boats get sold. www.wiltshiretimes.co.uk/news/23851267.canal-river-trust-makes-final-demand-evicted-boater/Of course George disagrees: In an email, Mr Ward told the CRT: “Obviously you will do all that you can to make sure that I'm permanently deprived of all my property. “I propose that the board should reimburse me in full for my current losses and I should be offered compensation.” Anyone like to contribute to a whip round for a tin of Brasso for George's neck? It seems to me George did all he could to help CRT. Did all that crowdfunding disappear in a smoke of puff?

“I propose that the board should reimburse me in full for my current losses and I should be offered compensation.” A canal boating expert could probably help him here.
