Thanks Met & Rog,have made a note in my Nicholson's.Will check if there's a cafΓ© & let you know ! Wasnt a cafe there in April this year. There is also a farm shop at the end of the canal, about 15 mins walk. Has some decent sausages and pies. Cheese selection ok as well.

Slightly off topic,ok well off topic. We're on the Ashby for the first time in 12 years.I can remember that folks said one farm shop was fab,but another was crap.Help needed !!π The one at Stoke Golding is excellent (just down the road on the towpath side at the bridge after the boatyard). Β It's the one that advertises heavily a couple of bridges before that is very disappointing....Β The heavily advertised one used to be brilliant, but around 6 years ago the farmer broke his back. Went downhill from there, understandably. Had the best goat/mutton Iβve ever tasted back then.

We were told it had closed down due to ill health, but were unclear if it was permanent. Sounds likely in light of your post ianali ... very sad. Rog

We ended up buying pizza from M&S yesterday (I know ... so posh) in a meal deal which included a choice of 'sides'.
We had 'dirty fries' ... woof!
Totally disgusting but we loved them.

We had a really good meal at the Globe Snarestone tonight.Much better than the usual pub fodder & the best waitress in yonks.Food was clearly freshly prepared & not microwaved-eg Crispy battered huge haddock & home made chips. Two courses each, two pints, decent bottle of wine & a coffee-Β£70.The waitress was bubbly, knew her stuff & was really friendly /smiley.The icing on the cake for Paul was that the hot meals were served on hot plates,he hates cold plates ! Excellent meal.

Co-Op reduced chicken and sweetcorn sandwiches. 60p. Luxury supper today !
The original price was Β£3.25 wtf?
Mad shit.
Not all that nice but in the absence of motivation to cook it will do.

What I found particularly obtuse was that one pack was 60p and the other identical pack was 65p.
Having met Tristram Stewart the much too rich bloke who raids supermarket bins for a living I was rather shocked as would he have been.
Why were they not both 60p? Or 00p?
bizarre

Thanks Met & Rog,have made a note in my Nicholson's.Will check if there's a cafΓ© & let you know ! Went to the farm shop this morning & bought a fair amount of goodies.πThey even stock the bread we like which we always buy in Polesworth. The cafΓ© is due to open in the new year- they were busy working today. They had problems with building regulations, bad weather early this year & sourcing materials. All okay now & it sounds like the project is now going okay.

I have good memories of the Ashby as spent part of my first winter on a boat up there. 94/95 in a 30ft Hancock and Lane Marlin. I remember picking pieces of coal out of the towpath after they did some dredging.
A bit boring but quite a nice quiet canal. For a number of different reasons I prefer the Thames but it was an experience being hemmed in.
Stoke Golding had a butcher for dead animal products.

Lots more cc'ers than when we were last there 12 years ago, including some boats which looked like they were held together with string & chewing gum(nothing wrong with that as they're interesting). Got chatting to a cc'er who we moored by & he said there were now a fair few who'd moved off the Coventry before they were moved off if you get my meaning.A fair few plastics with tents nearby each marina or town. Before folk start moaning,we got the impression that some boats never move at all.Not all cc'ers cc...

There is a lot of pressure on land these days.
I wonder what these people eat.
I had a cheap discounted egg and cress sandwich from Co Op earlier. It was alright.

So shall we assume that the somewhat tragic sandwich was the only solid to have passed your lips yesterday?
