So I’ve submitted a new foi request about the closure of facilities, I’ve altered the parameters so that it should fall in the financial restrictions. Let’s see how long crt procrastinate and what excuse they come up with for not providing the information? It’s on what do they know, but here is the wording. I refer to a previous request “Number of Elsan, toilets and rubbish facilities have been closed in the last three years” www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/number_of_elsan_toilets_and_rubbI clarified the request to include both - A) Elsans, toilets and rubbish facilities that have closed for temporary issues in the last three years? B) Elsans, toilets and rubbish facilities that have closed permanently in the last three years? - You confirmed that you held the information but refused the request as being “manifestly unreasonable” due to cost of compliance. I am now re-raising this request to include B) only as that would appear to fall well within cost parameters. Please take this new request to read - I’m writing to you to request the information about how many and which elsans, toilets and rubbish facilities have been closed PERMANENTLY in the last three years. regards kris

Perhaps you could just start a file, kris . Don't know if you receive CRT notices outside your cruising range but I received this today: "Notice Alert Shropshire Union Canal Location: Norbury Junction Refuse Disposal Point Starts At: Norbury Service Station Ends At: Norbury Service Station Friday 8 September 2023 11:00 until further notice Type: Advice Reason: Information Original message: Norbury Junction Refuse Disposal Point behind Norbury Services. This refuse point is now closed until further notice due to maintenance and contractor issues. We ask that no rubbish is left here and that alternative refuse points are used instead - the closest are at Tyrley Locks and Wheaton Aston. You can view this notice and its map online here: canalrivertrust.org.uk/notice/26203/norbury-junction-refuse-disposal-point You can find all notices at the url below: canalrivertrust.org.uk/notices"

My pet theory is that people living on boats is becoming a real problem and eradication follows. Only a theory. I sometimes wonder if and why people would take anything I post seriously. I am an irrelevant nobody with no influence.

The removal of services is becoming a real problem, because they seem to made the collections from the remaining bins less frequent. The last service point I visited (Saturday) had a working waterpoint and an unblocked, clean Elsan but the bins were overflowing, with loads of bags piled up in the compound next to them. It used to have a BW operated lock on it - now a piece of string.

It seems obvious to anyone but crt that if there are fewer bins they are going to have more rubbish in them. It would be interesting to work out how much less bin space there is.

It's not just the number but the frequency (or lack) of emptying. Similarly, the many reports this year of overflowing septic tanks in numerous locations points to a lack of awareness of the capacity and use of such facilities. With visitor numbers (boats, of course - not towpath users!) reportedly down by a significant amount this season it seems even more unreasonable that these "stoppages"/problems have arisen more this year than previously.

We moored at Norbury on the Shrewsbury locks line for a couple of years( not live aboards). The services block was always having problems-either the bins were full to overflowing or the services themselves were out of action...or both.I used to love the book swap & odds n' sods in there, but popped in this summer while filling with water & it was rubbish.I put some books there & reckon I doubled the books on the table !!

Stopped at Horbury Sani point last week, The resident boaters told me the elsan had been blocked for at least a week, despite being reported. They said "run your engine, dump it in the prop wash" Euugh! dirty bastards! Ignored their advice, found the manhole cover for the drain round the back of the block, the normal toilet and shower drains were running free, so it was clear. Dumped cassette in the drain. Had a similar problem, same solution, in Goole a few weeks before.

Not condoning this suggestion but the reality is that shit happens and alternative measures will be sought if the approved method isn't maintained. Using the prop as a macerator never occurred to me though.
On another subject, I wonder what Andrew's new squeeze will think of the wok...probably best to get past farting in bed before moving to the main course. 😁
ETA although one wonders if is it best done while moving?
