Busy, busy train from Sheffield.
We have reserved seats to Birmingham BUT young ladies have taken both.
Jane claimed hers but I find it impossible to turf a lady out of my seat to stand, whilst I take the seat.
Awkward isn't it.

No, if you’ve got a reserved seat. Politely point this out to the individual and ask them to vacate the seat.

Can't do it.

I had been working in Dubai, expected to be away for two weeks but got extended to four, I had been working non stop 14 to 16 hr days. Arrived back in London after an overnight flight which I just couldn't get to sleep on. Caught the train from Paddington to Tiverton, a two hour journey. Sat down in my reserved 1st class seat, next thing I'm being woken up by the conductor asking to see my seat reservation - 'but sir this is only to Tiverton, we have just departed Torquay...'
To be fair to the conductor he found me another seat in 2nd class and worked out I was better off staying on the train to Penzance and then returning, he even arranged a free 'pass' to do so. That train journey took me longer than the flight from Dubai!

I remember a flight from Dubai to Jakarta. There was a young lady in my seat, next to a window. I politely asked her to move. She wasn't very pleased, but moved to the next seat. Her displeasure seemed to ease quickly as I became aware of what seemed like unnatural closeness as the flight went on. I responded, to check I hadn't misjudged the situation. I won't go into details but let's say, a bit later on, it would be fair to say that I became an associate member of the 'mile high club'. I was due to spend the night at her's but immigration wrecked that by pulling me in for a lengthy interview. The previous working visa in my passport and numerous Indonesia stamps raised doubts in their minds as to the purpose of my trip. I couldn't find her when I was released and had no contact details. Oh well.

It's a lady. Can't do it. Rog Education innit. Is it in fact a lady or just a rude entitled idiot? Get the train guard and they will work out if it is a lady you are dealing with.

Definitely a young lady ... and I can't bring myself to make a lady stand whilst I'm sat.
I'm a fit young athlete, I coped.
It is awkward however.
On a different note, aren't there some fabulous station names ... almost poetic ... Yardley Wood, Whitlocks End, Small Heath, Spring Road , some lovely names.

White chap hell is a station quite close to my heart/kids. Others call it Whitechapel.
I discovered a station called Stone Crossing which rather aptly is right beside the Dartford crossing over the Thames. It brings to mind thoughts of a Roman ford across the River although I have not investigated if this was ever reality.

There is a generation with a sense of entitlement that transcends all discipline that needs to be taught a lesson. This is symptomatic of the lockdowns we endured with Covid. With the furlough scheme and W.F.H. whilst the 'mental health issues' are so sympathetically endured and generously supported, there is not much hope of improvement. That rail line, the old GWR main line to London, and the branch to Stratford was my childhood stomping ground. There were several 'halts' where you had to be in the right carriage to get off as the train was longer than the platform.

You think me insisting the young lady give up her seat to me would have 'taught a lesson' ? I suspect the lesson taught would not have been the one you intended. Besides, if it's possible (and I know it isn't) somewhere my old man would be smiling that I gave up my seat to a lady. That's a more comforting idea 😁 But I am capable and was willing to not insist on my reserved seat ... but it is an awkward system. Rog
