Fair enough. But he’s an amiable buffoon. I thought maybe he had done something to you personally?

You are a poseur of the first water. Why do you always attack Andrew personally? Fault finding tendencies. Lack of iron in the diet.

To me the pointlessness is the good part. It's necessary to eat, construct a shelter etc. All life does this in some way. But so far humans are the only species to engage in the pointlessness of painting or whatever. It's an expression of culture. And probably self-awareness. Do space aliens do art or is it all interstellar pillaging with lashings of unnecessary violence? I can’t believe that the art in the Mesolithic was pointless. Life was basically about survival and most of your energy would have gone into hunting and gathering food. So I can’t imagine them spending lots of energy on a pointless endeavor. There must have been meaning that has been lost, in my opinion. Have you ever heard the theory that theatre is an extension of religion? Humans naturally look for meaning and significance where no such thing exists; for example this :-) looks like a face. And if your whole existence revolves around hunting for food and clothing then it may be natural to mythologise it in some way. I used to find it peculiarly amusing that dope smokers would ritualise the act of getting stoned after a time, ' blessings' to Shiva and bullshit like that. Anyway I digress...art is the process of making something from nothing; it reflects some aspect of existence; even the moronic scrawl of 'I woz ere' is a demand for recognition. Some artworks may outlive the species...Mt. Rushmore, for example. Lyrics from a song I don't recall the title of: "Some make the trip from cradle to shroud Un-noticed members of the crowd We've been robbed if we are not allowed To make a mark upon the Earth" Time for a cuppa.

I think there are a few million Shivites who might disagree with this statement. As for the rest of your post, it doesn’t really explain your statement that you think all art is pointless. Obviously perception of art is a highly personal thing and something determined by your own point of view. It’s a highly objective thing. So for you art is pointless which for me is quite a sad POV. As for dogless thinking art is pointless, what about music? Which after all is an art form. Without music there would be no guitars for you to fetishise. Oh yes and theatre definately evolved out of ritual/ceremony.

When a musician writes lyrics that aren't true to life but convey a meaning, none the less. Is this conceptual art? I hope this is acceptable. I mean, if musicians only wrote literally about making loads of money, shagging lots of people, getting stoned, fighting class wars etc. etc. songs would be rather dull and repetitive. Folk might even stop buying them.

I think you need to go and read up on “conceptual art.”

'Everything is pointless' Profound.
I've used this on occasion, when people ask me 'what's the point of fishing?'

Everything is pointless, so there’s no point in doing anything. So why do you get out of bed in the morning?

Everything is pointless, so there’s no point in doing anything. So why do you get out of bed in the morning? This is it. Different people get out of bed each morning for different reasons. All reasons are valid, to the respective individuals, and constitute 'the point'. Very often people just enjoy doing things and don't feel the urge to expand on this. Another, not having the same urges but having urges others don't understand, probably shouldn't ask others to try to justify why they do things. 'What's the point...?'

I’m not talking in general, about other people. I’m asking a question of the people on this thread who’ve made the statement “it’s all pointless.” So if your not talking about what you think or feel, don’t bother replying. I’m really not interested in what these supposed “other people,” think.

I wasn't knocking the devotees of Shiva, just the dope smokers who want to turn getting stoned into a holy activity. Met a few along the way like that.
Art is inherently pointless in that it changes nothing. Except, perhaps, the beholder. Artists are, in the main, a bunch of flim-flam merchants. Illusionists. Possibly even 'magicians'.
And now... a few words from my favourite artist and flim-flam man, once described as "possibly the most interesting Englishman alive today". Incidentally he also, like another beardy loon of our acquaintance, lives in Northamptonshire.
