Obviously India has a publicised, highly structured caste system which, until very recently at least, went a long way towards deciding the outcomes for each born under each respective caste. The point I'm making about the English class system is perhaps more subtle. It's unwritten and largely, unspoken of. It's complex, not simply about, for example, how much money someone has. Despite it being largely contained within the sub-conscious it drives widespread judgment of the relative worth of folk. I'm suggesting this is uniquely British. Or more accurately, uniquely English because my experience in Wales suggests that if it exists here, it's on a much smaller scale. For example, in a pub, you can find a rich landowner sharing a pint with a bloke off the council estate. In England, it would be more than likely to find the two drinking in different establishments. Have a look at the people within any pub or restaurant in England. They are all broadly similar, most of the time, right? I don't know about Scotland, perhaps Nick could comment. It’s a complicated subject. But firstly I’d say that anywhere that has a long-standing system of monarchy is going to have an Upper Class of royal family and their hangers-on. In the UK these tend to be English people for obvious reasons (the monarchy has been mostly London-based for centuries). What makes the UK class system interesting and different from say USA is that it is definitely nothing to do with how much cash you have in the bank. It is possibly the case that the amount of land/property you own can be a fallout factor, but owning a lot of land or a country pile doesn’t make you rich in cash terms, and lots of upper class land owners are relatively skint in terms of cash available to spend. Neither does being upper class make you happy, nor a sponge on society. I cite my childhood local upper class family, the Marquis of Hertford who owns Ragley Hall, about 3 miles from where I grew up. The Lords Hertford of course being closely connected to the royal family since Henry VIII and probably earlier. In the 1950s Hugh Hertford inherited a very run down and uninhabitable Ragley Hall and he along with his wife Louise (daughter of Prince and Princess de Chimay of Belgium) put a massive amount of effort, time and money into restoring the Hall and the grounds. It is now a destination that gives pleasure to thousands of visitors a year. Hugh was gay and so their marriage wasn’t particularly happy. Their son Harry is now the current Marquis and he has a degenerative condition that means he is wheelchair-bound and can now hardly speak (he’s roughly the same age as me.) They had kids and the eldest and heir apparent William has been disinherited in a very public falling out which has torn the family to shreds. Louise (the dowager) is not on speaking terms with her son and daughter in law even though she lives on the estate. They won’t be seen in the same building even. For some inexplicable reason they have always been very friendly with my parents (who are jumped up Brummies) so mother is torn between the two sides of the family. All in all they are totally unhappy. And the estate is always on the verge of bankruptcy. My point being that being closely related to the queen and having a huge estate doesn’t automatically make for a happy life. By contrast a working class chap may be quite content with doing shifts down the factory, having a loving wife, kids and grandkids, living in a council house, going down the pub for the odd pint etc. So I would think carefully before being envious of Upper Class toffs with big houses. Scotland is quite diverse in that central belt /urban Scotland is quite different from eg the Highlands. Most central belters consider themselves working class, except for Posh Edinburgh who think they are very superior. In the Highlands it is more of a feudal system where the workers doff caps to the land owning gentry. Except of course most of the land owners these days are foreign or at least New Money. Glenfeshie estate just up from the Gliding Club is owned by Anders Polvsen, a danish billionaire who made his money with the ASOS clothing brand. He also owns several other enormous Highland estates. He has been known to visit the local pub in Kincraig for a pint, but not when I’ve been there. He probably hopes no-one will recognise him. Oh and of course 3 of his children were blown up and killed in a terrorist attack in Sri Lanka so his life isn’t particularly happy either.

People really do think that money solves the problems. In a lot of cases it causes more problems.
My sisters and I suffered a high conflict divorce because of family money and people wanting to get hold of it.
Had we been ordinary people there would have been no need and the marriage may have stayed intact had there not been money someone else wanted.
I don't live with the woman but we have no conflict. The children don't need that it is very unpleasant.
So yeah. My excellent family was destroyed when I was a kid because of money.
I am bitter about that.

But you still want the £300,000 ? The old man wanted me to have it so I am not arguing. I will spend it on beer and Boats and have a nice time. This is the last throw of the dice for the family money. Not much left now and it is supposed to come to me so I can eradicate it and clear the air. Its not a lot but I could probably get 20 yars out of it. By this stage it has no chance of negatively impacting my own children they will have normal lives and no doubt be successful in what they do.

You should be working on improving your memory, Clinton, . . not sitting gawping at the gogglebox. Any recollections of this starting to come back to you yet :- thunderboat.boards.net/post/79806/thread . . . . . . . . . it's that old post of yours from 31 August 2017, . . the one in which you recounted how you and Shit-for-Brains Coventon bow-hauled your broken down boat along the canal to the Vetus agents yard in Middlewich, . . and how they lifted your engine out, and left it standing on the aft deck of your crappy boat, . . and how you and Shit-for-Brains then bow-hauled the boat, with the engine on the aft deck, back the few hundred yards along the canal and tied it up again, with the engine on the aft deck, on the same spot where you'd been broken down for the previous three weeks.
Here's your TB post, . . in case you can't remember how to open a link, . . and in a nice big typeface, easy for you to read :- "Well the engine is out now. Many thanks to Mr Stabby who hauled the boat to the lock while I made a futile effort to steer it with my pole, due to the silt being about 3 feet deep. The yard had the engine out in 2 minutes, very impressive. A fork lift truck and chains, bit of manouvering past the exhaust, it was out, and now is on my stern deck. The latest frustration is that there are no timing marks on the crankshaft pulley. It never rains, it pours."No, not really. I don't see the point in poring over historical facts, which have already been fully documented. Going over the facts again, won't change them. Who's wanting to have any 'facts' changed ? Not me, . . but you're acting as if you'd prefer 'the facts' to be very different from the truth that you've been so carefully avoiding for so long. What I want is you showing enough decency and honesty publicly to put the record straight. Facts are fine by me, . . particularly with some attention to the malicious and untrue accusations directed at me, . . that YOU have been perfectly happy to keep shtum about whilst your psychopath pal Vince ' Mr Stabby' Coventon has been publishing them on the internet for the last six years, . . with the clear intention of doing harm to my professional reputation and good name.

But you still want the £300,000 ? I don't think many people would be saying no. Were it estates and land and attitude problems I might be reluctant but £300k BACS I think I will say yes! It is literally the last of the family money There was a lot more but we have a history of having a floccinaucinihilipilification of money going back a long way.

Evening again after another busy family day.
Back to the boat in the morning ... three trains but should be on board by 12.30pm and it looks like a dry, sunny day too.
Looking forward to getting back aboard.

You often say you're going to the launderette , and then when we meet up you're in the same t shirt you're always in. I remember a photo of you in a suit (lad's graduation I think) but it's the t shirt that sticks in the mind. As ianali says ... photo or it didn't happen 😁 Rog

The building work around Kate Boats old site at Warwick has really progressed. I quite like the design of them as they seem to nod towards old wharf buildings. Rog
