Thinking of booking next years holiday. Her sister and fiancΓ© want to come and my brother, wifey and two kids. They all wish they came this year, their fault for saying no last time.
Anyway, I've been looking at obviously two boats but the Cheshire ring has popped up in my searching of good value. My thoughts are that it could be done in 7-10 days but I'm thinking two weeks to enjoy a day in Manchester and some late starts, early finishes to go exploring. Easter fortnight is actually coming in at a reasonable price.
Am I going I the right direction and has anyone got their own thoughts on pros and cons on the ring, lock flights are a good thing as everyone enjoyed going up and down Hatton, lapwoth and the farmers flight. Are there tunnels and aqueducts and my nipper loves doing swing/lift bridges.
Obviously Manchester would be a good day out but are their other towns or places that would give us a break from boating.
i was looking at heritage boats(hoseasons) in Congleton.
many thanks,
Adi.

In my opinion both Lymm and Macclesfield are worth spending at least half a day each in.

If you have a couple of days spare, the trip to Whaley Bridge (or better still Bugsworth Basin) from Marple Junction and back is very scenic.

www.penninewaterways.co.uk/cheshirering.htmThe pub at Bugsworth Basin is OK. Tesco supermarket next to canal at the fork for Bugsworth/Whaley Bridge. Just to north of Furness Vale swing bridge is the best view east to the central spine of Pennines. From New Mills you can catch a train to Sheffield and back, just for fun. Maccy Canal & Peak Forest both nice. Pub (Queen's Head I think) by canal in Congleton good, and you don't even need to trot into town as there's a well-stocked grocery shop and Post Office there too.

Oh yeah, pubs are good as well. Cheers. I've had a look at canal plan. And there may be too. For detours.
What about going up Anderton lift and back?

We hired a boat from Anderton Marina and were told we couldn't go on the boat lift, although that may have been because we were first-timers.

Thank you for the heads up, I have just checked and CaRT says that you have to have the hire companies permission and I guess a temporary licence for the river. If all else fails I'll pay the Β£35 and take my family on the trip boat up, a 45 minute cruise and back down( or is it the other way round)

We did the Cheshire ring in a week. It was too much of a rush to make worthwhile, but you still have fun.
I would suggest two weeks would be good so that you can enjoy some of the lovely spots. Manchester alone is worth a full day.

I would also suggest that the ring is done anti clockwise (especially if hiring form Heritage) so that you take the water with you along the Ashton Canal, which can suffer from low pounds. Also plan to clear the Ashton 18 locks within a day. Safe moorings on the Peak Forest just before Dukinfield Junction and Piccadilly Village (Central Manchester) on the offside or continue on the Rochdale 9 to Castlefield, still achievable in a day.
