The problem is that there are too many cars in the UK and too many arrogant gits in expensive cars - and no-one actually doing the road repairs , just a sea of cones! The Minister for Transport needs a damned good kicking in the wotsits.

If you think that constitutes a good and acceptable standard of driving I'm sure glad you don't drive buses over here,, though seeing the way some bus drivers drive over here you'd probably fit in quite well. I cut my driving teeth on the Green Line 735 Hertford to Oxford Street. The biggest vehicle goes first. Those who hesitate are lost! 4 years driving buses around Hertfordshire and Essex and in-&-out of London. Also used to do the 724 Stansted/Harlow to Heathrow. And many other routes. An attitude which nicely confirms why so many cyclists get killed in London.

Why is it rubbish - a 'biggest goes first' attitude means 'stuff everybody else I'm going'. Cyclists being the most vulnerable road users in a collision are pretty well down the food chain for anybody with an attitude like that. Cyclist don't always do themselves any favours but as a driver of a very large vehicle you have a particular duty to look out for other vulnerable road users who you could potentially kill or injure. Otherwise you shouldn't be driving a bus and should stick to a moped.

I used to own a lovely tee shirt .... it was white with black tyre track straight over the centre. with the words "Pollution is a pedestrian" I wonder how much it would cost to get some more printed but with the word "cyclist" instead

I stayed in Cairo for a month once and got the best advice ever. Don't look at the vehicle, look at the driver's eyes. Make eye contact. If you don't or can't, beware.

Ridiculous really. This gives carte blanche to cyclists to behave like idiots on the roads which is already a problem. A bicycle is a vehicle. Only when bicycles become subject to insurance and licensing can they be taken seriously. Until then they are just a nuisance. I like bicycles but in a lot of situations they are just not appropriate.

I always do this when out with my kids crossing roads. It might not appear to be necessary but shit happens quickly then its too late. I may be a bit sensitive about it as a school friend's mum was killed by a vehicle rapidly exiting a petrol station. Sometimes drivers don't have full attention. You need to know they have seen you !!

I do that too, even at crossings - be they zebra or pedestrian controlled. if they make eye contact and look happy they get a smile and an open hand wave to say thank you while we cross. If they make eye contact and look pissed off they get a scowl And no wave. If they don't make eye contact chances are we don't cross.

At the moment cyclists and other vulnerable road users who are involved in road traffic accidents are generaly believed to be at fault. If it's proved the driver was not at fault then fair play but this would allow injured persons to be cared for and compensated quicker and easier. How can a dead person give evidence? The driver would have to prove innocence instead of someone in a coma or who has died, which is difficult. Why should the injured vunerable person always have to prove their innocence. I'm not sure how it would work in fullness or if I support it fully, however many many countries have it.
