The 145 mile run from Gas Street, Birmingham to Little Venice, London, has been taking place this weekend.
Any of you on the GU will have spotted the competitors, bearing numbers, running, walking or shuffling their way south.
Now Jane and I enjoy jogging, so that we can indulge in the occasional pie and pint, or two, whilst keeping control of the waistline.
But 145 miles seems torture.
And it costs upto £90 each to take part.
Am I missing something?

Rog My eldest son has done a couple and little sis has just booked me and her to do the 100k race to the stones over a weekend. dunno why she does loads of stuff, its not that i'm unfit ...i just do not want to turn my enjoyment of walking into a freaky exercise session..I'm grumpy... Theres exercise and theres exercise and this ultra stuff will just wear our your joints quicker... I'm still grumpy

... Am I missing something? I'm not sure if you are missing something, where are your keys to the boat? Are the runners causing you harm or distress in anyway?

I once completed three marathons in one day.
Of course, they're called Snickers now.

Not harm or distress, but genuine concern. Jane's wanting to feed them all. Some look in very poor condition, but they have done over 100 miles as they pass us. Rog

Patty, that's a 60 mile walk. Good luck with that. Hope you have a stop over in a luxury hotel halfway I've done the Lyke Wake Walk several times, at 42 miles, and done the Edale to Malham half of the Penine Way, so I understand the pleasure of distance walking. But the idea of the GU challenge is to complete it within forty four hours, or so. That's tough! Rog

If they need food or water and you are offering then they will take it and be very grateful for your help. I'd like to see you do 100 miles and not be in a poor condition!

They are economic migrants. The situation is so bad in Birmingham that the government is going to have a high speed railway built so people can get away from there quicker. its awful.

Well, actually no, there's virtually no industry in Birmingham any more. I used to regularly load export loads from Birmingham twenty-five years ago, now if I drive around Brum virtually every single factory I remember has been demolished now. There's not much that was made in Birmingham that can't be made cheaper in Poland, China etc.

Hope you have a stop over in a luxury hotel halfway Rog Yes so I believe and its over a weekend with...... sleep overnight in a tent...no fancy hotel/hot bath and liquid pick me up its part of her memorable 60th year, together with the half marathon she's just done, the 2 bike rides and an open water swim..and probably loads i don't know about. I like walking and exercise but i just cannot get why there has to be so much at once, it goes from being nice to irritating..I hated the overnight marathon walk she booked us into to distract me from thinking about ex on his wedding day to my ex best friend...I so wanted to quit. It was cold, wet and I ached. My 60th birthday challenge I set myself was to drink 60 glasses champagne in 60 different locations followed by a little book called 60 shades of champagne...talk about BOAT for repair of boats if I finance this it'll be in that ball park...fortunately so far my kids have paid the price.....
