Today has been a bad day... AS much as I find my employer an intolerable twat... today, he got in first, and gave me 3 months notice - suggesting that next Week when I have my first operation, I count t as gardening leave rather than feck about with sick pay and dont come back... he'll pay me the legal minimum redundcancy at the end of it... which is capped at 489 a week ergo - he's a twat. I would have worked for him for 15 years in Oct... hence why he's done it now so I only get 14 years worth. ON the plus side, ONCE I've got the nearly 4 months pay, I WILL tell him exactly what I think in glorious technicolour ... Aunt! Contributions to the "Save the Ginger Fund" welcome by paypal, cheques or cash... pm for details

You sound like a really nice tolerant bloke if you are going to call him an "Aunt"

Sorry to hear this, hope you manage to sort something out soon. However, he is on a bit of a sticky wicket doing this unless your job is to disappear, i.e. he can't just get someone else along to do it. I'm in a not entirely dissimilar position so you have my understanding.

Good luck.............. Sorry to read about your problems, sadly I'll not be donating to your fund, isn't that what we pay our NI contributions for!

oddly enough, yesterday when i got to work I noticed his nephew has just started with us....
and as for What I can claim... hmmf... can't make head nor tail of the gov website... I suspect if I have a lobotomy and then go to a walk in centre somewhere, someone ELSE will be able to work out how to get the best from the "system"...
OR (as is more likely) we'll either a) start up the narrowboat hotel business a bit early or b) I'll go knocking on doors until I find something to do - that doesn't involve either hand for a few months.... ... ... options look limited.... I'm good with my mouth thought - apparently!

It'll turn out for the best, things always do if you wait long enough.

Sorry to hear that. But then again, he seems an odd sort of boss so maybe you are well rid. If you want advice about your situation, I'd suggest the citizens advice bureau

Embrace redundancy its a wonderful thing. I was made redundant six months after my 60th, no pension and a new mortgage. Now 5 years later working for myself with so much work I am loving it. No mortgage and a state pension to boot. Life will always get better after what you think is a downturn its not its an opportunity. On a serious note he can't just make you redundant on a whim, there has to be consultation first and you have to be advised that your job is at risk. With me it took about a month from the time I was advised that my job was at risk to the time I was actually made redundant and went on gardening leave. If he has not followed the correct procedure then you will have legal redress. Similarly your job has to go he can't employ someone to do the job you had as then the job is not redundant.

It sounds shit but then to me and the redundancy i would accept it with thanks from an arse hole employer from what you say he is. As said above he cant just dump you like that without good reason but again sod him. There are many jobs out there. I was shit on a few year back after 12 years of working my ares off with only black mail in the end. I walked away with head held high. I searched for a month after a year off after my two operations which was cause from the last job and got 4 job offers. If i can get over i am sure you can, you sound more normal than me New things and better things will/can come of it. Good luck kida with what ever you choose to do

Remember that words said in the heat of the moment may spoil the reference he will give you, which you will need if you want to work for another employer. You may be able to negotiate a little more - I did when I was made redundant - but you will have no hope if you tell him what you really think, though it may make you feel better the day you do it. Talk to a solicitor - 30 mins initial free chat with some of them - and if you think he is acting outside the law, but he wants you gone, would give you a lever to get some more out of him rather than taking the risk of fighting him.
