As jenlyn suggested we think about this in another thread I thought it'd be worth asking people.
What annoys you on canals? Do you like to sit on your boat looking for things to be annoyed about? Or do you think all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds?

I'm panglossian by nature. The only thing that really annoys me is hateful people that get annoyed. I hate them.

Had to look that up!
Jenlyn appears quite 'driven' by his fervour against C&RT's perceived mismanagement of the system.
I am afraid I am fairly sanguine, and whilst improvements can easily be made I do not see the threat to boating in general that others do.
What's your view on the overall picture?

Rog My view is as yours. I don't really see much of a threat. There is a maintenance problem in some places I agree with that, and its not impossible that some "remainder waterways" may get closed again but I think overall there isn't a problem. I think that living on the cut cheaply with no home mooring may become significantly more awkward at some point but this will only affect a fairly small number of boaters.

Well, in that case, what annoys me on the canals is when Jane and I do a long walk, heading for a canal side hostelry, and arrive to find it's closed.
Hate that.

I had a very bad version of that after a mammoth day on the Grand Union in 2010. After 50 locks in one day (2 of us on boat - me doing locks and other chap driving his boat and was out of season so no other boats sharing locks with us) we arrived at the Grove Lock pub (Near Leighton Buzzard) and it was still open. Attempted to enter and they said they were closed and told us to bugger orf. Maybe they thought a couple of knackered boaters would lower the tone ! I hate that.

I thought personal attacks were illegal on here.
Do you have issues around the fact he is unusually tall?

I think CRT are pushing the legal boundaries, in response to CMers pushing the boundaries (if staying in a "general area" can be pushing boundaries, a paradox like NBTA). However, CRT, as a responsible organisation, should be acting within its constraints, using bylaws etc, not overiding rights granted by statute with terms and conditions. I also think they a management heavy, have caused many competent staff to leave in frustration, hampered by box ticking and form filling. We need lengthsmen with the ability to spot and fix problems there and then.
Failing that, how about adding to the data loggers role to include checking the infrastructure, simply log broken paddles etc, without waiting for a boaters to report it. Then a repair team to fix it rapidly.

I know, after all, you also drive a Saab. You are like a dog with a bone about my bloody car !! Do you have some sort of issue with Saabs? One of the reasons I bought it was because the 1991 Rover Sterling I went to see had a headroom problem and I'm a bit tall. My Saab 9000 aero was beside it on the forecourt asking the same money ...
