Maybe that's why Saab eventually failed as a car manufacturer. It took them ages to put the ignition switch in the right place and by then people were pissed off and just said Saabs were for masochists and weirdos and dodgy estate agents. And for design/architecture students with spare cash.

I've often argued that the best way to encourage safe driving it to have a blade sticking out of the steering wheel. Seat belts and air bags just encourage bad driving.

What annoys you on canals? Nick Norman. Funnily enough, we just saw him not ten minutes ago. Obviously I shouted "TellyMackus!" as he went by but apparently that's not how it's pronounced.

Seat belts and air bags just encourage bad driving. I don't believe safety devices directly encourage bad driving but they have some effect. People have their own perceived risk level they are happy with. Some take more risks than others. If you put an air bag in a car steering wheel then there will be some people who will drive more dangerously because they perceive the risk (to themselves) to be lower. Hopefully this is a small group. I imagine some studies will have been carried out on pedestrian accidents before and after airbags - there might be some interesting stats in there.

We've met Nick before. We've met quite a few people this trip who we know, including Jim on NB Amelia who I did the HNC and Standedge Tunnel with, and the crew of NB Fiddlesticks who we did the tidal Thames with last year.
