I thought it was just scrotes you were keen to stab. I doubt they can afford to hire boats as they spend all their benefit money on crack and big exhaust pipes.
Assuming the hire boaters were not scrotes this is a worrying development.

Why would they leave all 4 paddles up, unless to fill the next pound down? It doesn't help going up, and it doesn't help going down, in a lock. Three years ago we followed a hire boat from the company in Oxford (by the Catholic church) from Oxford all day - caught them up the next day and as not another boat had passed I accused that lazy slag of being the one who had left all the top gates open. "Oh," she says "the hire company told us to leave them open." She knew she was guilty and is still to this day a fucking liar.

Its good to exorcise these demons occasionally.

Why would they leave all 4 paddles up, unless to fill the next pound down? Because they'd only just picked the boat up and didn't fully understand how to operate a lock. So we explained it all to them and when they looked a bit sheepish, we said don't worry, everybody has to start somewhere. I also advised them that it wasn't a good idea to have their stern rope trailing in the water. We love hire boaters, and never fail to be touched by the combination of inexperience and enthusiasm. At Rugeley now. Making good progress although the rest of the run home is rather tree-heavy and we wouldn't be surprised if more than a few come down in the storm tonight and block the navigation. We can afford to lose a couple of days though if push comes to shove.

If you do get trees blocking the navigation one tactic is to smile at any scrotes who turn up, give them a saw and ask if they would like to cut up some trees. You might be pleasantly surprised by the reaction. Its a lot better than glaring at them and threatening to kill them by stabbing.
Bit cold for scrotes now so you may be out of luck. Mind how you go.

The hire company didn't tell 'em? They didn't read about it before? Videos a-galore on Youtube. Do they leave the plug out when they fill a bath?

Because they'd only just picked the boat up and didn't fully understand how to operate a lock. The hire company didn't tell 'em? Presumably they did, but there's normally only 20 minutes or so of tuition given when folk pick up hire boats, so there's a lot of information to take in and I suppose sometimes it doesn't sink in straight away. Most hire companies seem to explain how locks work using a scale model which doesn't actually have working paddles, or water in it. We've arrived at numerous locks to find hire boaters unable to operate it and when we first hired a boat we were told "Don't worry if you can't figure it out, somebody will soon come along and help you".

"Don't worry if you can't figure it out, somebody will soon come along and help you". I guess if they said "somebody will soon come along and knife you" it would be offputting.

Nearly home now, moored just above Atherstone top lock. Will probably run to Ansty tomorrow then run in for an hour on Saturday morning just to warm the engine up in preparation for an oil and filter change. Then we're going to run down to Rose Narrowboats on Sunday because the boat is in for blacking next week. I'm not allowed to stay on the boat while the blacking is done so I'm off down to Ramsgate for the week, I'm house and cat sitting while my friend is away in Greece on holiday, this will be the first time I've been in a house since Christmas.
Then I suppose it's back to work for the Winter. I'm provisionally planning to tour the canal festivals next year.

Blacking and bits of painting done (gunnels, bow, tunnel bands, counter) and guaranteed for twenty years, or until we do our first lock We've got a couple of weeks now to head back to Warwick, then work until Christmas. Going to enjoy every minute of our last days of boating for the year. Rog

Last year I was handed a similar christmas jumper to wear in store as part of my uniform, on..... the 4th November!!! I understand that stores wish to promote christmas sales, but it is not as though the world will forget that christmas is coming UNLESS they trim up etc etc in October. Ah well, puts a few pounds back in the pot Rog

A couple of years ago I delivered 26 pallets of Easter eggs into the Waitrose RDC at Aylesford on 22nd December.
