They keep indicating the need for youth within their ranks, and are in the process of rebranding, but then a picture of them all huddled together at this year's agm shows none of them are under 70.

Can't blame them (or me) for their age, but their very limited view of boating and boaters we most certainly can lay at their feet.
From reading about the early days, it appears cracks began to appear very early on between Rolt's view of preserving the waterways as navigations, and Aikman's view which tended more towards a 'waterway theme park'.
I guess the Aikman view won.

There's nothing stopping anyone from writing to the IWA and having a good ol' rant at them! It's coming to that time of year when our IWA membership is up fpowal/cancellation. I joined them in the 'spirit of the waterways' thinking our money would be somehow going 'in the right direction'. They do have nice Christmas cards for sale My limited experience of the IWA is that they only listen to views they approve of. I have found entirely the opposite with the National Trust, English Heritage, and the RSPB, so clearly it is entirely possible for large organisations to heed their membership. Just saying. Rog

I see the IWA has been providing "secretariat" free and gratis but valued at £3k to £4.5k per year. As far as I understand it that means an office and staff for meetings. It can't be morally right that the IWA has the committee in it's pocket like this?

Which usually means a jolly with free booze and food.

I cancelled my membership this year and advise all others to follow suit they wont listen to the members and do whatever suits the yogurt pot owners want which is reduced license fees. The waterways are about all craft little and big and if the craft suits the waterway its on what is the problem?

Now it is often portrayed as a committee of little men wearing admirals hats, and all the commodore of their marinas. What went wrong Rog In the early days of the IWA (in fact this holds true for most organisations) The members were people who wanted to get things done and were the types that rolled up their sleeves and got on with it. Organisation "management" "Chairman" "secretary" "Treasurer" etc were all unpleasant jobs that had to be done but were a pain in the butt because it took your time away from doing things and had you talking about things instead. If someone volunteered to do this job then it was handed to them with a sigh of relief. As the organisation developed then people who preferred talking about things and telling other people what to do gradually ended up with all the positions of control in the society .......................... simples !

Slow to respond johnv, but that is a perfect description of the 'committee' mentality.
On a personal note, I feel NABO has succumbed to a similar position.
Maybe it's the curse of organisations.

I have nothing really to add about the MP (they DO all seem to be cut from the same cloth!), but was quite saddened as I read the title and thought it said paramilitary, I did hope we were setting up a paramilitary branch of TB.
