I've been looking at the forecast (heavy snow tonight and tomorrow) including the sub zero temperatures, and wondering how Paneke's coping.
This of course provoked thoughts about how our liveaboard members (Jenlyn, Betty, Bassplayer, Stabby, Loafer, to name a few) are getting on now that the shortest and toughest winter days are kicking in. Hope you've all found good and safe moorings for christmas.
We'll be back on board before the months end, and whilst looking forward to it, I hope the weather has eased a bit to give us a few days grace to get the boat back up to a residential temperature. We get a bit soft living in the house for three months.
Be careful out there, and have a great christmas.
Rog

I have a permanent mooring for the Winter and I think I'm all sorted out. I have a full tank of diesel, a full tank of water, two bottles of gas and a portable gas cooker, about 400kg of coal, loads of firewood from the trees we chainsawed up last year when they blew down in the storm, enough tinned food to last at least a month and 24 cans of Special Brew. When that runs out I'll have problems but it should last a couple of days. Only real problem I am predicting is that it might take a day or two to clear the lane if we get snowed in, so I might not be able to get to work but that's not the end of the world.

Always stocked up and fortunate to have places I can go...including my wife's house! (I know, it's a strange setup but it seems to work).

Tucked away in our little corner of the country we are still snow free but as I'm all solid fuel here the coal and wood bins are full and topped up everytime I go near the coal cash and carry..the chocolate advent calendar thief is carrying all the heavy stuff for me...I know he'll be away soon as he's got cold weather training booked before his next trek so I am ensuring all those must do tasks I cannot do, are done. Hope you all stay warm on your boats..

Like the pyramid lanterns. Must make one. I'll put a couple of the balloon lights in, the sort I had on my Lantern Costume.
Got myself a big Ali snow shovel a few years back, BnQ sell off in April £10. You did well to dig out that big channel for your bus, or did you just supervise witchy? It's settling up here now, not like the Midlands yet, though I live in hope. Have chaingrips for my walking boots and 2 walking poles, 4 wheel drive!

So far, we've not found it at all cold - the fire has been on full time since about September anyway but I must admit, at the moment we're getting through at least a bucket of coal a day - that said, if I make it up about 9pm and half shut it down - by the time I'm up again (circa 7 ish) it's STILL 24+ degrees in the lounge and it only takes a gentle riddle and few more coals on to get back up to about 26-28...
The coal store was about half full yesterday but I've filled it up now so all is good - I did a pump out on Friday so that's another 6 weeks (or so) until the next one and filled the water tank this afternoon AFTER I'd run a couple of loads through the washer (and then tumble-dried it)...
Bring on the snow - I'm hoping to take some photos tomorrow but despite the forecast, I doubt we'll get more than a scattering.

My girlfriend just phoned and she said she's expecting eight inches tonight, which seemed strange to me because when I checked the weather forecast they weren't predicting snow for Ramsgate.

Well I'm hoping I don't get a power cut here. I don't use my stove much, but just went to light it for the first time this year and the chimney seems to be blocked. Not sure how that has happened as I haven't used it since I swept it in the summer. fan heater it is then...

Unless some physical item has materialised to block the flue, which seems highly unlikely, then I'd be suspecting debris which has slowly dropped off of the flue onto the baffle plate until it has blocked air flow. I'd try removing the baffle plate and seeing what's sitting atop it, then banging/ scraping that off.

The baffle plate isn't removable because I have a stupid Villager Heron stove, but I can get my hand above it and it seems clear. I'll have to investigate when it's lighter and warmer.

That surprises me because the Villager Heron is simply a slightly larger sister version of the Village Puffin, which I have, and the baffle plate just slides out.

Chinamans hat legs rusted and top bit has fallen onto the top of the flue terminal blocking it?
I had a Heron stove years ago and as I remember it the baffle plate slides out towards front of stove.
Having said this I have also come across a Heron which had the baffle plate welded in place - something which must have been done in the factory as you can't get to it once the top is on.
