I cleaned the flue pretty thoroughly so I can't see that being the cause. The baffle plate isn't removable because I have a stupid Villager Heron stove, but I can get my hand above it and it seems clear. I'll have to investigate when it's lighter and warmer. That surprises me because the Villager Heron is simply a slightly larger sister version of the Village Puffin, which I have, and the baffle plate just slides out. Not quite. The Heron was superseded by the Puffin. I think there were problems with the door falling open as on the Heron it opens downwards and on the puffin it opens to the side. Another potential problem with a Heron is that the ash pan door opens on a cam arrangement which can vibrate to the open position so could be dodgy on a boat. The puffin has a sliding vent instead.

Chinamans hat legs rusted and top bit has fallen onto the top of the flue terminal blocking it? I had a Heron stove and as I remember it the baffle plate slides out towards front of stove. No, it is all in good contition. I'm wondering if a bird has got in and tried to nest or died. There is no dead animal smell, so hopefully not the latter. Yes, at some point Villager stopped making the baffle plate removable. It makes no sense and makes cleaning the chimney a bastard of a job. No idea why they would do such a thing.

Having said this I have also come across a Heron which had the baffle plate welded in place Why would anyone do that?

That's a Puffin then not a heron.
I think the reason that the baffle was welded in place was to prevent chimney fires. I had a chimney fire once on a narrow boat. It was a bit mental and sounded like a rocket engine. It was a Heron stove and I had removed the baffle plate as it kept getting clogged up with shit. This allowed the flame to creep quite a long way up the flue and set fire to all the creosote or whatever it is you get from burning wood . I had been burning a lot of wood if varying quality and not always fully seasoned. .

That's a bit odd. And it's more expensive. I bought a Heron new in the mid 90s and it had a drop down door and cam operated lower vent/ashpan door which dropped out completely (no hinge) then the model was replaced by the Puffin which had both doors hinged at the side and a sliding vent. It looks like you are right Mr Stabby the name "Heron" is now used for a slightly bigger one. I guess they are free to use whatever name they want but the model previous to the Puffin was also called the Heron just to confuse things

Easy to do after a few bags of weed.

No snow on the Slough Arm but very cold. Put the water on as I left for work this evening to top up the tank and it was only coming out in a dribble as the hose was starting to freeze. Will try to remember to bring the hose indoors when I get back in the morning.
Indoors its all still nice and warm with the big double door stove jobbie blazing away. I've reduced the size of the fire using bricks so when it gets really really really cold I just take a couple of bricks out to increase the size of the fire. Also have the webasto but so far not run it at all this year except for a 2 hour test back in oct.
We need snow.....the sprogs want to get playing in it.

My girlfriend just phoned and she said she's expecting two inches tonight, which seemed strange to me because when I checked the weather forecast they weren't predicting snow for Ramsgate. I think you've missed the point, I'm in Warwickshire tonight. Still, as I always say "It's not big but it would fill a pram".

And now the powers gone off at the marina... Excellent. Light the stove then. I mean, there's three feet of flue between the stove and the roof, how fucking difficult can it be to work out what's wrong?

Thanks for thinking of us Rog, we too are ok. Jules stopped by this morning and topped up the fuel tank and replaced empty gas cannister for a full one (plus the one we are currently using), we've still got 9 bags of coal on the roof plus 2 in the cratch and enough split hard wood for about 5 - 7 weeks. Freezer & cupboards are well stocked so we should be ok till the end of the month when we'll need another pump out, but it's only a few miles away Hope you and Jan have a very Merry Christmas
