I need a new shower pump, my existing arrangement is a Heath Robinson arrangement of a bilge pump sat in a cut-down plastic gallon can. It was flagged up on the survey as needing improvement, but now the pump seems to have weakened considerably as is having difficulty throwing out the water.
The surveyor recommended a Whale Gulper, these are £85 and while I can (reluctantly) afford to waste that type of beer money on something I won't even be able to look at admiringly, is there anything of equivalent quality available for less?

The Whale Gulper is about the best for the job. I had one for our aborted shower tray fitment, it's found a new home in Manchester though. You'll have to drink cooking larger for a week or two - sadly that's the price of quality and keeping rinsed off now and again

You say the pump is weakening considerably. Is it spinning slower (audibly), or just moving less water? If the latter (and possibily even if the former) it’s probably just clogged up with all your dead skin, pubic hairs and dead lice, all nicely bound together with soap scum. So dismantle and give it a good clean out.
Alternatively cough up £85 for a whale gulper. They are the bees knees for shower drain and don’t get clogged.

Ours is a Johnson pump.
Made of brass and cost a bagging fortune.
The Gulper sounds good to me, but the clean out first is a good shout.

Just food for thought.
About 6/7 years ago our pump just stopped working.
I ordered a new one which cost about £125.
Meanwhile I did what Telemachus suggests, and had a bit of a fiddle about and clean up.
Ever since I have a working pump.......and a spare doh!
My old Dad said (ex miner) any pump that stops working, will mostly start again after a clean out.
Of course plastic cases are less robust.

It's not visibly clogged up (I've had it apart and cleaned everything) but it truly is an awful bodge of an arrangement anyway, I'll post a photo of it when I change it, it has been one of those "to do, eventually" jobs since I bought the boat.

My Dad was a miner.
He said the pumps they used often just stopped.
Swap over and test the old one....and it worked.

Also check the pipework to the outside world. It can clog with soap and miscellaneous body parts which slows down the flow after a few years. An effective long term cure can be replacing a long haired partner for a short haired one, or alternatively pouring toilet/sink unblocker in from the skin fitting side.

One of the few working things that came with my floating shed was a whale gulper, works great, treats miscellaneous body parts with disdain. Go for it, don't spoil the ship for a ha'porth o' tar.

I've ordered one and it should be arriving today. I would have driven over to Swindlers and got one except they want £129 as opposed to £87 online.
