K&A around devizes should be good for photos I guess its better if the pictures are taken using real cameras rather than mobile phone things. To be honest most mobiles now have better cameras than most cameras. Have you ever looked at the size of the lens on a mobile phone and compared it to the size of the lens on a 'proper' digital camera? I think a digital camera will beat a mobile phone every time.

Since when has it been a 'rule' that the photo has to be taken in 2018? Since yesterday. My post, my rule. The idea is to encourage people to go and take photos, not just dig something out of the family albums. Does this not sound like a good idea? I don't really want to see any more "it was good in the Olde Days, working boats chugging past Berkhamsted" pics, or pics of Idle Women cooking something in the "galley". It's 2018 - let's see some NEW photos - eyes open, be creative, use your brain, make some bleedin' attempt to win! Of course there could be 2 competitions running side by side - the 2018 photos, and the "old shit I found in the attic" competition. YES NO

Just for reference, what would be a half decent digital slr for a beginner ( who has used old style slr's in the past ) I would look at Olympus. I would not touch 'Lumix' with a 2-mile long barge pole, after having read reviews about them.

Canon S1. "Its half way" between a compact and an SLR. Plenty of glass and real optical zoom. Phone camera zoom is not a zoom its just cropping the picture which you can do afterwards anyway... Another marketing trick. Digital zoom is 100% pointless . Canon S1 - I paid £50 for a secondhand one a few years ago on eBay. Records to an SD card.

Foxy I cant be arsed arguing about it but I don't believe anybody submitted any 'out of the attic' pictures at all, just some taken a short while back, the only stipulation was that they were taken by the person entering and they had a waterways/boating theme. But as you are obviously wanting to muscle in and run the thing feel free you run it fella. You obviously post lots (as in lots!!!) of pictures so I don't honestly think you need help posting the entries up. (Your other comment about Lumix cameras is utter shit too BTW). Mine www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicgf1Overall though - and I guess you probably already know this - I really loved the GF1, and will find it very hard to return it when this review is finished, meaning that I may have to wipe the dust and cobwebs off my wallet and actually hand over my own hard earned cash for one. The Olympus E-P1 now has some very, very strong competition in the form of possibly the most engaging and enjoyable camera on the market today. A compromise, for sure, but a surprisingly happy one.
Previous one www.dpreview.com/products/panasonic/compacts/panasonic_dmcfz200It's pretty hard not to like the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200. It has all the bells and whistles that you'd expect on a high-end super zoom, plus an F2.8, 25 - 600 mm lens that no other camera can match. That nice lens does command a bit of a premium, but I figure that low light and action photographers won't mind dropping another $100 for it. Despite some issues with highlight clipping and redeye, the lack of an eye sensor for the EVF, and the fact that the full manual is in PDF format, the FZ200 has more than enough going for it to earn my recommendation.

An idea of budget would help but any of the compact offerings from Lumix, Nikon, Sony or Canon would cut it. I particularly like the current crop of small Sony's eg www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-Cyber-SHOT-DSC-HX60V-30-multiplier_x/dp/B00IFEWK56/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1518174873&sr=1-5&keywords=Sony+cybershotThe more you are prepared to spend in general the longer the zoom you will get if that is what you want. Though note a 'long' zoom isn't necessarily compatible with good results. If you don't want to go new there are loads of bargains to be had on eBay because people get sucked into 'the newer the better' mantra and flog their old camera to buy the very latest model. Or lots of people are flogging their compact cameras because they are increasingly using their phones. As you have realised pictures taken on a phone dont always come up to the standard of thos taken on a camera but that said some very good pictures can be produced by some phones. If you are thinking about a particular model stick it up on here and people will advise or seek out the trusted review sites (eg DP review) opinion for you.

I don't mind having a go at organising the whole competition, but I am not overly-ambitious. I would be quite happy if you were to do the layout/voting scheme when September-October are here. I just think it's 2018, and the idea of a competition is to 'get out there and do it' and produce new material. We want to see the canals and waterways and boats as they are today, not rummage through old shots covered in dust. My ambitions are things like walking the Pennine Way, bagging a few Munros and Corbetts, Interrailing round Europe, driving across the USA, and long-distance cycling around the UK. I'm a cyclist by heart (long distance with Carradice saddlebag, not the towpath mountainbike nor the lycra annoy-the-motorists type), I'm not even a boater, and certainly wasn't a discussion-forum sort before. I know you're thinking of entering your Sprotbrough snap again, but it's already in the 2018 Calendar you silly old sod. Look, here (September): photos.app.goo.gl/iL55sAAbX06GUyCo1

We need to get snapping cos it's Helmikuu already and before you know it, it'll be Lokakuu and the competition will be closed. Rog

That means it's impossible to have any summertime photos.

If this is all intended to form a 2019 calendar, could we please have a photo on the cover of some bird with her tits out, rather than 2018's horrendous photo?
