I've got an old silencer for a vacuum pump at work, I'll look at it and see what size fittings it has, been so long since I looked at it I can't remember. I'll post the dimensions as well, if it's any good to you it's yours FOC, I'll let you know tomorrow. John is right, an increase in size won't bother it, it's not a highly tuned two stroke that needs the right back pressure and pulses to help cylinder scavenging Added, an absorption silencer will help no end, you won't get it as quite as a Panda Fischer job but it will be acceptable. You could consider keel/raw water cooling for the Genny in time, obviously there's a fair bit of work in that, would be neater than using the rad and fan and give you the option of a wet exhaust that will take the edge of very nicely indeed. With your current setup you will need a good bit of ventilation - not just for the engine but the generator won't like getting hot. It may well be worth fitting a bilge blower to get some positive ventilation thorough the engine hole.In the past, I've had generators in the enginerooms of my barges that did many hours without any problems, without additional ventilation with the use of a blower. I'm sure that the idea is good, and it will certainly do no harm, but I don't know if it's all that important, as the engineroom on Kris's boat is fairly big, there's lots of space (by the looks of it, as I've not seen it in the flesh yet), but on a narrowboat-or a boat with very limited space in the E.R. it would surely be neccesary. Peter. I'm guessing he's thought of that, I was thinking out loud more than anything. I did fit a nice 3" bilge blower and ducted it right up to the alternator just to give it a bit of an easier time, I've also ducted the engine intake air into an air box from by the gunwale. The fresher the better We are as you say space limited so every little helps in our case 🚢🍻

I've collected your parcel from my mums today, thanks very much gazza I think it's perfect for the job. I reckon I'll get a couple of 90degree reduction bends then there should be enough room. Thanks again. Let's hope it reduces the noise enough.

The only drawback sending it was it going by the quick and convenient UPS collect service rather than dropped off to the nice girl down the post office. Oh well, I'm sure another excuse to send a parcel will come Cheers. 🔨🚢🍻👍

Well Kris, I reckon that's a proper job It'll do for now, I might investigate putting sound absorbent material around it and boxing it in a bit more at some stage later.

If it would have been mine however, I think that I would have put that bit of flexible much closer to the engine, this to avoid weight on the exhaust manifold, and after that everything could be fixed solidly to the ceiling and/or bulkhead. But as I said that's what I would have done if it was on my boat, you have of course all the rights and reasons to have done it the way you did. Peter.

The way the framing is arranged it looks like the generator could be completely enclosed fairly easily - maybe even with some sort of service access hatch. Looks nice.

Looks a tidy job.
Has it made much of a difference to noise levels?
