thank you for that link tecka, well said indeed. I fear however that the gun culture is so entrenched in the American psyche that it will still make no difference

I think you're right that it's too entrenched to change the overall viewpoint but surely at some point better background checks need to be done.
I find it crazy that someone buying from a shop has checks done but sold privately or at a gun show then no checks are done.
Surely just closing that loophole will make a difference.

I heard on tv last night that there are more than 300,000,000 guns in the US. That's a lot of guns. I have had a couple of trips to the US and discussed guns, and quite a few have the attitude that not only is it an Americans right to own a gun, you are a bad citizen if you don't.

Has anyone here lived in the states? Yes, I was a Mesa Arizona resident for eight years. And yes, I owned several handguns. Plus I had a permit to carry a concealed gun. Why? Because I could. It was also the time when there were several indiscriminate shootings on the airport I was, and still do when required, work(ed) at (Falcon Fields Airport). It was also the time when "The Base Line Killer", was carrying out his random killing spree... LINKI think you're right that it's too entrenched to change the overall viewpoint but surely at some point better background checks need to be done. I agree, for my permit to carry a concealed weapon in the state of Arizona, I had several background checks made by Maricopa County Police Department. However, just to buy a gun in a shop (lets say Walmart), all I had to do was prove I was a resident of the state. There were no background checks made ! I own a few shotguns and two stalking rifles here in the UK. The police checks and security visits are quite stringent, and I personally feel Uncle Sam would benefit enormously by adopting the way we conduct these checks, and apply it to their gun ownership laws.

I feel no sympathy because all these shootings are in effect self inflicted. It is within the power of the American people to get guns out of the hands of all but the police and armed forces. Phil PS. this is the 18th such shooting in 45 days of 2018

An appalling waste of life, and destroyer of families.
But isn't this kind of incident the 'other side of the coin' from the right to bear arms?
It doesn't have to happen, but I suspect it will until stricter regulation is enforced.
We all know strict regulation (as in the UK) can't prevent gun crime, but it does at least limit it.

I think its so sad that lessons cannot be learnt from these mass shootings and measures taken to control gun law in some way....how many more children will go to school and not return home because of some crazy kid who got his hands on a weapon?..

I recently joined an online discussion group. DISQUS .COM and I posted my opinion to the gun laws over there Got a response that only countries with no liberties and civil freedoms etc do not have private gun ownership

I saw a story today that one of the teachers jumped in front of some students and took some bullets and is now in intensive care. What a man.
A real hero.
Eta. He died. With two other teachers who lost their lives so others could live.
The ultimate sacrifice.
According to abc that is the 18th school shooting this year.

It is sad but unfortunately history is destined to keep on repeating itself. Gun ownership is a way of life in the US and while it may seem strange to us, I'm sure lots of things we do are strange to them.

Yes but Morris dancing and boating along muddy ditches never killed anyone, well only relatively few anyway. They get the gun culture they deserve I'm afraid.

I recently joined an online discussion group. DISQUS .COM and I posted my opinion to the gun laws over there Got a response that only countries with no liberties and civil freedoms etc do not have private gun ownership We have private gun ownership in the UK only we have strong background checks meaning they get into the wrong hands less often. I've had this discussion with a few Americans and it always seems to surprise them that we can keep guns in the house. And no hand guns since 1997 which means its difficult to keep it concealed.
