Speaking of boaters, I'm about a third of the way through 'Grey Seas Under' by Farley Mowat. Proper ripping yarn, and thanks for the recommendation Gazza and Bargemast. If anyone would like to read it, pm me an address and I'll post it on. Can you just give us the quick version in 50 words or less?

I did throw in the word 'bitchy' last week - anyone remember? I like Nick's posts. I think he just sets out to be amusing, and I'm slightly taken aback to see people swallowing the hook, line and sinker. So what if his boat has fake rivets and doesn't really look like a 'real working boat'? How many here go up to a lady in a burka and say "You don't look like a real woman?" If it's OK to have Luton, Dewsbury and Birmingham look like a fake version of Saudi Arabia, then it's also OK for a boat to look like something it isn't. There are members of this forum who have the piss taken out of them far more than TellyMackus and they seem to cope with it without throwing all their toys out of the pram. hes gone off for a sulk now. He's probably the only poster who has insulted every member of this forum on numerous occasions. Nick if you can't take it, don't give it.

An Ormelite is an excellent boat, but totally shunned by the vast majority who want to get afloat, not because it isn't (or wasn't) fit for purpose, the market changed and narrow GRP cruiser production tailed off. I know very little about boats but I have the feeling a heavy steel narrowboat will sit more in the water and be more stable, not bob about like a plastic pot. If we had a plastic/GRP/fibreglass/resin boat we'd be really careful not to bang into things like the stonework at the entrances to locks. That must be really tiring. We try to be careful as it is, but our old battlehorse can take a few bangs - and then I can quickly slap some black paint on to hide the evidence. My Ormelite and I have travelled several hundreds of miles on the system and she has a collection of plaques from previous owners covering the majority of the system. She has been driven (not with me at the controls I hasten to add) head on into the granite stone between a paired set of lock in the northern end of the T&M .... the crash was very loud and resulted in broken cups and glasses in the cupboards but the damage to the bow was insignificant. In my ownership she has been along the GU, T&M, Trent, Chesterfield, Fosdyke and Witham,Sheffield and South Yorkshire part of the Don, Part Aire and Calder, L&L, Bridgewater, Weaver, River Soar, Regents, Tidal Thames and Thames estuary, and the Gt Ouse and it's tributaries. I can assure you, I am not worried about locks etc ..... just incompetents at the helm of narrowboats ...... (not often hire boats except on Sunday/monday near hire bases ) but sometimes from owners who believe that controlling a boat should involve lots of engine revs and shouting of orders and waving of arms. I usually have a couple of fenders out, as with her flared bow the edges of lock entrances when going down hill often seem to have a rough corner that if you touch will scrape the paint. but she is not festooned with fenders when cruising. Some of these older cruisers were built for the canals and have substantial rubbing strakes (Shapfell's are teak with a steel capping) and are very heavily built. Most people who only have come across the more modern, highly glossy, more delicate craft built for estuary/river use are surprised by just how tough this generation of GRP craft are Ormelite on Benfleet creek by mudlarker2, on Flickr Humber Renown @ Ferrybridge passing Shapfell by mudlarker2, on Flickr Ormelite ES 1960's Fibreglass canal cruiser by mudlarker2, on Flickr Shapfell at 1973 Ely Rally by mudlarker2, on Flickr Shapfell at the IWA rally Ely in 1973 Please note that there is a gap of over 40 years between the first and last photos

You have to wonder why Nick is so bitter. Hes had a very privliged life, had a good education (allegedly.) Had interesting well paid work, is well off in his retirement. But isn't happy with his life and takes it out on other people. It is really sad, oh well it takes all sorts I suppose. Nasty fuckwit.

I always look at it with an open view Gazza works with steel yet owns a fibreglass boat why? Is it because he knows the limitations of steel? Or because he knows the moment a piece of steel is made it does its damnest to revert back to rust!!

I used to think the same as you, nowadays I'm not so sure tbh, a little birdie tells me he has possibly dipped his toe in the Broads forum with a very similar posting style. It's a shame either way, sad if Nick is indeed an arsehole in real life as he seems to have become behind his keyboard, sad that he can't use the time he has on his hands to a productive end.

I noticed you went very quiet when you got a taste of your own medicine. Have you finished sulking yet? Tears all mopped up? When was that that I "went very quiet" then? Possibly for an hour this morning when I drove to Wharf House Chandlers to buy some stove rope? Or maybe for the next hour while I was clearing out the rebate in the stove door and fitting it? That's not called "sulking" Mr TellyMackus, it's called "having something else to do". I'm sorry that you are so sensitive about your fake rivets, but if you feel that way then maybe you shouldn't have had them glued on in the first place.

You post endless comments about how rich you are, how clever you are, how you are always right. How well educated you are, how superior you are. You call people cunts, thickos, poor, lazy, liars, often when you have blown something totally out of proportion or tried to twist comments to make it seem something it isn't. And yet you get uppity when your behaviour is called out, flouncing about like a wounded and wronged geek who the rough school bullies are picking on. It's all a big act, thankfully on here you have nowhere to hide. As I said, it's a shame your input has plumbed new depths of shitness, you do have the capacity to post useful content, but for reasons best known to you you've decided to Keep digging this hole, perhaps you ought to give Jeff your spade?

Shapfell is a very handsome boat.
I hope mine looks as well at that age.
I've never really understood the need to 'do down' other people's choices merely on the grounds they weren't your own.
On a similar vein, I don't understand the necessity to insult anyone who disagrees with me on a given subject.
However I am self righteous and sanctimonious to a level that can cause annoyance.

It looks incredibly long is this picture? It's the Aire & Calder Navigation: Castleford - Ferrybridge - Knottingley: then turn right for Pollington and Goole - or left and go down the River Aire and swing left onto the Selby Canal. We liked it a lot out that way, lots of luvverly deep water!

I've never really understood the need to 'do down' other people's choices merely on the grounds they weren't your own. But it's not "doing anybody down" though, it's just the rough and tumble of an internet forum. We take the piss out of Kris's toilet, Martin's caravan, JohnV's Harold Shipman beard and your nefarious boat deprivation activities, so why should TellyMackus throw a hissy fit when he is included in the fun?
