ahh just read, yes it is, so the yankees care not one bit, sitting over the pond. Wonder if they own the ground the shops are built on, coul be worth a few quid. I know the warehouse at coventry is joined with the shop, lot of land! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toys_%22R%22_UsThe nearest one to us is at teesside retail park and i am fairly sure they dont own the land that one sits on. Probably owned at least in part by the local council. I suspect that will be common. I would say you were right, our local branch's car park is council owned. I would say they owned the lot or at least have a hand in it. Thinking about it, it was built on the local lido so the land at least was council owned.

Yep. Railways all owned by foreigners. Confectionary companies mostly all flogged off to the Americans. Arabs owning 50% of London. Marple Locks still not repaired. Cotton industry shipped to India. Power stations operated by the French. Snows a bit and schools close. Students with rings through their noses at 'University' (previously Willesden Poly) now studying Transgender Rights instead of Chemistry. I believe toys r us was a us outfit that was imported here, a bit like McDonald's. So as far as i know nothing was "flogged' off to the American's. The dignity of the British has been sold to the US Corporate Devil.

From wikipedia "At its peak, Toys "R" Us was considered a classic example of a category killer, a business that specializes so thoroughly and efficiently in one sector that it pushes out competition from both smaller specialty stores and larger general retailers" so yes. Once it arrived in the UK people buying from these stores were effectively selling the UK to the US. And since then Amazon and eBay have pushed out toys r us. More american corporate. How strange. I've never been in one of these shops. All my children's toys are from charity shops (they have very few toys and can make up elaborate games with things like pieces of folded paper and of course a few little matchbox type cars). I don't really understand the need for all this shit in toys shops. We went to Hamleys in oxford street just before Christmas. That was mental but was nice to be with kids who did not want us to buy anything

I bought a decent joystick from maplins last year, previous to that I got my first suitcase satellite system from them 9 years ago which was good kit. 2 purchases in 9 years. I have contributed to their demise.

The dignity of the British has been sold to the US Corporate Devil. The fact that they have gone bust would suggest in regard to this particular retailer that is bollocks. Smyths have taken a lot of their business and they are Irish owned I believe.

Just the three from me, a Hue light bulb and a cable at xmas and an arial for the boat, i thought the shop had some cool gadgets, but as already said you could buy from the big online boys a lot cheaper. Mr Bezos is guilty i feel of a lot of failed company's!

I suppose like the majority of the population I have never bought a single thing from Maplin. Or Currys for that matter. I tried to buy a radio from Currys once but they refused point blank to sell me one unless I gave them my name, address, phone number etc. Not sure what planet their business model was intended for but it wasn't Earth. I left empty handed, crossed the road and got one from a hi-fi shop who were perfectly content to simply swap a radio for money and very polite and helpful about it.

If this ever happens to me I just give my name as Mickey Mouse/John Smith/Fred Bloggs and my address as the store address.

I liked to make the point that they'd lost a sale due entirely to their stupid obsession with grabbing your details which I can only assume was to build a database to sell on.

If the item is more expensive at Currys yes I would agree with you (but I doubt the loss of your sale will plunge them into administration.)

Who knows how much my business with them could have totalled. If they put off grumpy gits like me who don't believe that price alone is a basis for decisions and who tend to be able to afford that luxury, they may have alienated a chunk of their (potentially) best customers?

I think the point is why cut your nose off to spite your face, fair enough if the item is the same price elsewhere or cheaper (Presumably meaning you would have gone elsewhere anywhere) but if it isn't then just make something up.
