www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-43121649They have also pulled their listing on Quidco cash back site. I only discovered this as I wanted a monetary rocker switch for mouse macerator toilet conversion. I must admit I buy sod all from them these days, and when I do it's click and collect, in and out as fast as possible. Last purchases were a couple of resistors and a momentary push button to prime the Wallas - not exactly what you'd call a big spender! I wonder how long they've got?

Maplin's is just a glorified toy shop nowadays. I suspect much of their past success was down to catalogue sales, but of course you can get the stuff they used to list anywhere nowadays.

EBay must be killing them. Perhaps the gradual move from a geek electronics shop to an adult toy shop was a mistake / bad timing ?
They have prominent locations in a lot of towns and shopping centers I wonder who will replace them. With Tandy it was carphone whorehouse.

I'm not surprised a lot of the stuff they sell is tat. The last few times I've been in looking for something, they haven't had it. So I've bought on line.

We must be way more reserved here in Northamptonshire than you hedonistic buggers in London

Yes the canary wharf one does things like drones, flashing light type equipment, sex toys, some CCTV things and also some other items which are too sensitive to mention on here.

They have always scored on having components that I didn't have to wait for postie or China to get to me, OK they may have been a bit dearer but the last two times I've used them I've got what I wanted that day on the way home from work. I guess it's hard to feed 2500 staff on a few sales like that a year! As said eBay must be absolutely kicking the arse out of them. The slow death of retail sales (and this time not usually on the high Street) continues. I'm as guilty as anyone on this score though.

I just bought a Whale Gulper 220 pump for £86 on ebay, including postage. Midland Swindlers wanted £129 for exactly the same item. I don't feel guilty.

There's a small independent electronics shop called "Potts" I've used it since I was young so know all of the family who run it. Usually entails an interesting discussion about something electrical. I probably don't use this shop enough really. But then I don't do much electronics anymore.

Guilty as in doing the same rather than guilty as in a feeling of guilt for doing so, like you price is normally king - the only exceptions being where time is of the essence or a seller has shit feedback and i'm not willing to gamble on will they/wont they send it? or will it/wont it be any good?

don't use them at all anymore .... as you say Gazza, they're a glorified toy and tat shop now. Although the "geek" electronics market is not very big, they really abandoned it totally.
The last time I went there for electronic bits, I wanted 10 NPN transistors a dozen or so resistors and and about a dozen basic diodes (1N400 series)
They had a total of 3 small transistors (all different) and 4, 1N400 series diodes (just one of each rating) This was not because they were low on stock this was the stock level that head office said they should have ..... completely crazy I mean BC107 transistors only cost about 5p maximum, diodes even less ..... it must cost umpteen times as much to keep ordering than to actually keep a quantity in stock in each shop
needless to say, I never bother going there anymore, Although they are not cheap, RS Components get all my business for that kind of thing now.

RS is great because if you have an account as I do, there is no minimum order. I needed a BNC connector, 0.85p. Well in the end I felt slightly guilty and ordered two (in case I screwed up the first one) so £1.70. They arrived next day via 1st class post. Not much profit in that!

Wouldent it of been Currys/Dixon's that took over the Tandy customers. I remember radio shack quite vividly. they still exist in the USA and Australia. Carphone warehouse reminds me of the bloke who owns KJC mobile phones, Darren. I worked for his brother doing ground works on a derelict country mansion that he restored into his family home. He owns onecom now and has just got a £500 million order form Vodafone. He's doing alright.
