that Lock keeper (if its the tanned chap) is a really helpful and friendly chap... apparently, when we return, we have to make him a bacon butty!

Did Bank Newton locks. Jane elected to do the lock work as it was very windy, but she did have the assistance of a volunteer for all but one. There is a swell in the towpath side lock wall of lock 40, about a third of the way down the wall. The locks are made of huge stone blocks, so a boat could get 'hung up' where the swell is. I would have thought that a normal level of vigilance for passing through a lock would ensure all is well. Loads of hire boats travel through these locks without incident. I didn't consider the locks to be any more dangerous than any other if I'm honest. Beeston Iron lock heading towards Chester seems to present a much greater 'hanging' risk, but thank you for the warning. They are really pretty with a stunning back drop. Rog I've been through the locks loads of times, yes you have to be aware and pay attention but isn't that true of any lock. The boat that got hung up that Geoff is talking about where lucky to get paid out. As when the incident happened he had left the boats unattended in the lock(with people aboard and was away setting the next lock down. Not good practice I would have thought, all I'm saying is his lawyers must have been good. How do I know because I was the next boat down after the boats that got hung up, so was waiting for the lock in question at the time.

well i guess if a boat has been hung up they have to be more cautious and warn people..thought one of those locks had had 2 boats hung up....

Another incident waiting to happen. Incredible. Oh yes, let's have a new logo - perhaps the new logo should be a boat sunk in a lock. ps - interesting, that, kris. As I always say, seeing is believing - was the boat owner negligent? You need to keep an eye on your boat in a lock every few seconds. Locks are only dangerous if you are silly, but then, they should be in good working order to start with.

I wondered if it was a case of lifting paddles and wandering off.
By the way a beautiful L&L short boat 'Ariel' came down the locks today.
Helmsman on board and crew working the locks, and no problem.
Also a Silsden hire boats wide beam managed to get down with no problems.
I know things can go wrong, but surely that just emphasises the need to pay attention in locks.

Afraid not, but I'll try today at the Skipton festival.
Kennet is there too, so I'll get Jane to take some pic's, and then see if stumpy will post them.

Sorry for not posting lately, the reason is that my 100GB/month were used up a good week ago already, and now my internet is much too slow to use it without falling asleep waiting for things to come up on the screen. The "ARIEL" is a replica 50' x 12' that you can see in the link that foxy posted in the Skipton thread, where you can see 2 photo's of that boat, I have quite a few others that I can't post, but if Rog's Jane is taking photos at Skipton you will surely see plenty of them shortly. That link you posted, bagemast, just comes back to this page. Here's my link which I posted earlier - but the boat in it is ARIES not ARIEL: goo.gl/photos/3AELkPLEW9p5Cepk9(I don't understand why the link you gave comes back to this page, and the one I give goes to the photos - the letters & numbers of the link code are identical) (and did you mean ARIES to start with, and not 'ARIEL' ??)

Good morning Foxy, yes of course, you're absolutely right, the boats name is "ARIES", I hope you'll forgive me this mistake, I've had a bad night and aren't really in good enough shape to write anything properly. Btw, I know of 4 replica L & L Shortboats that I've seen on the L & L canal of which 3 were at the festival at Skipton in 2011 1/ Eller 2/Aries 3/Swallow's Nest 4/Garston Thanks for your correction, Peter.

You see foxy, I wasn't the only one that made this error. It's always nice if one can blame someone else for mistakes, and in this case I blame Rog who started this, and made me and Roger follow. Peter.

Sorry, that should read Aries (the penalty of glancing at the name without reading it fully) a replica short boat moored about 80 yds from my front door. Roger
