We're moored on the windy stretch between East Marton and Bank Newton locks.
We walked back to East Marton and visited the Abbots Harbour cafe by bridge 162, for tea and cakes. Smashing place too.
We then turned around and walked back down Bank Newton locks.
It is a beautiful blue sky, sunny day, but chilly in the wind.
But despite the good weather , I have to wonder if there's a prettier flight of locks on the system.
I know we had to come through Blackburn and Burnley, but it's well worth it.

Don't forget about jumping on a train at Gargrave/Skipton and going somewhere like Appleby for a day trip. If you have bicycles you can cycle from Gargrave to Malham Cove.

Enjoy it, both of you - it gets better still!
Hopefully, One Woman and Her Dog will be crossing the Pennines again soon x

Rog We've got the Skipton Waterway Festival on this BH weekend, the 5th to the 7th. Also the Tour de Yorkshire bike race will be coming through Skipton on Sunday midday-ish so Skipton will be heaving with visitors, moorings booked and full for the event and the Tour de Yorkshire will mean that many roads are shut off before, during and after the race passes through. Just to warn you in case any of that might affect your plans. Roger

Rog Thought the Abotts Harbour place did something a bit better than tea... If not the pub up by the bridge does so and is dog friendly. Note to Foxy - if walking the PW between East Marton and Gargrave and if you are not focused on following the exact route, use the canal instead.

Dangerous?
We're thinking of mooring at or near Gargrave and getting the train in to Skipton on Saturday, but thanks for the warning.

We did that last June - walked from East Marton along the Pennine Way to Gargrave, back along the canal. Then we walked along the canal from East Marton to Gargrave along the canal, and after bell ringing I got a car lift to Bank Newton Locks and walked along the Bank Newton lane/farm track which goes past Newton Grange. Yes, it's a nice stretch from Barnoldswick to Gargrave. We were playing with the idea of moving to Gargrave and living there permanently... who can say what the future holds?

I wonder if there is a more dangerous flight of locks ... You're thinking of the Lock 40 incident. I didn't notice has it been fixed, that rocky lip/edge. The lock keeper who worked us down was pleasant enough. The flight was open then from 0830 to around 4pm (last June-July). We shared the locks with another boat, I don't recall anything of note. narrowboatworld.com/9417-boat-hung"Why isn't Lock 40 included in CRT's 2017/18 Winter Works?""C&RT settled my complaint out of court, with over £500,000 liability costs and expenses, because C&RT knew they were liable for the sinking of my boat due to this protrusion and their neglect."

Wouldn't recommend diverting from the PW to include Barnoldswick, would probably result in missing Lothersdale and Thornton-in-Craven, two villages that are PW memories to me. Last time I was through that way I chose the canal through Barnoldswick and stayed at the Old Stone Trough before rejoining the PW - all ok but missed out on more.

Wow, that will be some going.
The Wigan end of Cherry Tree looked very pleasant.
Good luck, at least the forecast doesn't look too bad for you.

Did Bank Newton locks.
Jane elected to do the lock work as it was very windy, but she did have the assistance of a volunteer for all but one.
There is a swell in the towpath side lock wall of lock 40, about a third of the way down the wall.
The locks are made of huge stone blocks, so a boat could get 'hung up' where the swell is.
I would have thought that a normal level of vigilance for passing through a lock would ensure all is well.
Loads of hire boats travel through these locks without incident.
I didn't consider the locks to be any more dangerous than any other if I'm honest.
Beeston Iron lock heading towards Chester seems to present a much greater 'hanging' risk, but thank you for the warning.
They are really pretty with a stunning back drop.
