Moored at Uppermill. Well I use the term loosely. A long stretch of “visitor moorings” with bollards, and a full pound. What could possibly go wrong? Well apart from silt and rocks in the cut I suppose. We spent about 30 mins exploring the entire length of VMs and this was the best we could do. Lovely new blue signs everywhere though. “Making life more frustrating by water” I think they say. Still, the locks don’t leak and only one low pound. Although even the full pounds are barely deep enough in places!

You and kris are merging The new signs are particularly annoying when simple management issues aren't being dealt with. You've quite a while to wait now for the tunnel. Is it 20 August ? Rog

Thank goodness.
Uppermill's a nice little town, but not for a month.

Uppermill is Greater Manchester since 1970's.
The whippets withdrew with their cloth capped owners into god's country, Yorkshire.
Tha nos!

Just thinking, we haven’t seen any whippets yet. They probably bought them for cash.

Bad night last night. The DUCKING FUCKS (ducks to you) spent the entire night nibbling the boat. I got up several times to tell them to poke off but they kept coming back. There were hundreds of the little bastards - due to the foolish locals feeding them. And then finally, after I’d wrung a few of their necks and they went off to hassle someone else, there were burglar alarms and car alarms blaring. So not much sleep which has made me and Jeff grumpy, especially as it has been pretty trying getting up to the summit.
The canal really is a wreck. Sides all knackered, rocks which used to make up the sides in the middle of the cut, lots of silt. Clearly the bywash levels have been lowered to reduce leakage (rather than fixing the problems) and any pound whose level is a couple of inches down from the bywash level only has about 2’6” over the sill - and we draw 2’8”. Obviously one would like to run lots of water down but then we might go aground in the middle of Standedge! Above lock 28W I could see a hole in the canal at the base of the bywash - water disappearing into the hole at a great rate and the pound about a foot down. So lots of bumping along the bottom and we had to run some water down. It is what it is, a 200 year old system that has not had any proper maintenance for years, in part due to lack of funds but what really PISSES ME OFF is wherever you look there are stupid new blue signs. Hordes of them. Can I now join Krissypoos anti-CRT club?
