I only became aware of the thread the day after Martin posted the link as I don't generally visit CWDF, at the time I was at Atherstone bottom lock and had taken two days to get there from Fradley. Seems strange that nobody has made a definite sighting of it but I understand from a recent CWDF post that there may be slightly more to the story than first meets the eye? I think that was someone posting mischief or some sort of rumour if its regarding a tiff with the builders. edit. reading it again it looks like there might be a beef between builders and owners but nothing clear yet.

it was noted by cart at bridge 32 on the T&M wouldnt it seem feasible that it was going up the T&M the plates could have been put at Hartshill as a diversion as everyone seems to be looking in that area. And anyone can read cwdf and see whats being said

Yes, I mean I really don't know, but from the word "Go" it did seem a bit odd to me that the thief targeted one particular boat, and had the keys for it.

Not really, fellow Mercia marina moorers stated that the thief specifically asked for directions to the named berth on which the boat was moored, and opened it using keys which he had in his possession.

Its a mystery thats for sure.Stolen boats are normally found PDQ .I found one It was at Atherstone locks outside Hawkins,The bloke was as cool as could be.I went over and talked to him about canals all the while trying to see if it was the right boat. Then feck me he pulled into Hawkins and moored next to me,I was crapping myself in case he was reading CWDF as I was doing a running commentary on there. He had a crane all sorted till I told the owners of boatyard.

Looking at the thread on CWDF, it seems the licence plates have been found by bridge 30 at Hartshill. I'm slowly going anti-clockwise on the Leicester Ring and I'm at Nuneaton now so this boat almost certainly did come past me at some stage. I'm sure I've seen it, I just can't remember where or when. It seems a very amateurish theft if the thief dumped the licence plates on the bank where they were quickly found by another boater. It wouldn't take too much effort to put them in with other general rubbish and dump the lot in a CRT Biffa bin. Could be a red herring of course plates dumped at one point boat going in another direction by lorry?

I suppose it's possible, although it seems like a lot of trouble to go to to steal something of relatively low value such as a narrowboat.

Maybe a Nigerian President who died in a helicopter crash had hidden the country's gold reserves in that boat.

Now call me a Twat if you want to Tomsk, and I know you will (but I don't give a shit). But being an avid fan of Doyles' SH, and conspiracy theories. What nobody has mentioned from the start is............ Is this missing boat (With no Name), a potential insurance fraud in the making? ? Yank "Me Cock" On The Cut, comes online on the other channel, declaring the boat is missing from his marina. Then the alleged owners come along telling us it’s a distinctive Stenson with a particular stern, with this window pattern, and this and that. There's no CCTV footage. There's not even a precise date of when it was allegedly nicked. Some plates have been found, but not conclusive if they’d been dumped or placed, to lay people off the trail. Half the feckin’ nation is now involved looking for this boat, on a “not that a big canal network”, and it’s nowhere to be seen……………………………Kaaput.............Disappeared!!!!! Could this feasibly, even remotely be an attempt, to defraud an insurance company out of coughing up an estimated 80+ grand? Only a thought, after a pint or more of Beast. Stumpy p.s....This is the only place this idea has been posted.

It's a good advert for Mercia, "come and moor in our marina have your boat stolen and we won't even notice. "

www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=86179&p=1857590I thought this was a rather odd reply to the someone's speculation that there may have been some ongoing legal action between the owners and builder. I would have just said there wasn't any ongoing action and left it at that. As it reads, it doesn't seem to rule out some kind of action (albeit not for bad workmanship or unpaid debt). However, if the police know about it they would surely chase the builder up to rule out any motive like that.

However, if the police know about it they would surely chase the builder up to rule out any motive like that. Which to me is just them telling the truth. Somebody who claims a 'bloke down the pub' who claims to be a former employee of the builder has disclosed to them that there is on going legal action between the owners and the builder. They have just confirmed this. This 'bloke down the pub' has said that it has been stolen as some sort of revenge against the owners by the builder. Which boat builder would do that, and thereby completely trash their reputation in one fell swoop. The only legitimate reason I can think of for this boat to have been taken due to legal proceedings would be as a result of some sort of repossession due to a default on payments on a loan secured on the boat. If that was the case there is a proper legal process to follow to be able to do that. You can't just rock up and take the boat. Besides the owners have said no bad debt is involved. Unless somebody can think of another plausible reason why the builder would take the boat as part of an on going legal dispute this just remains ridiculous conjecture.
