Also winches the back of the Taskmaster out to expose the holes and let it dry. And now it is raining ! Predictable. Anyway the solution is going to be when dry to bolt on two square pieces of 3mm aluminium one outside one inside and loads of PU sealant. M6 stainless bolts. That will sort it. The holes/flaps are about 6 inch x 4 inch and I have 4 pieces of aluminium 12 inch x 8 inch so there will be plenty of support. I will be doing the outboard gear oil while it is so easy to get to. A small and odd difference between the TM and the Podium is that the outboard well in the TM is not long enough to allow the engine to be fully tilted out. I believe having the well large enough was a later design. Originally these vessels were moved from water to the Boat house on a trolley after every use. Later they were left in water where it can be desirable to store with outboard tilted.

Good day today. One of the committee members at the yacht club has agreed to sell me his fishing boat. It's an Orkney Strikeliner 16+ with 30hp Tohatsu main engine and 6hp Mercury auxilliary. It's a complete package with cuddy, anchors and ropes, fishfinder, gps, radio, flares etc. Will be meeting him over the next few days to conduct a sea trial, check the motors, electrics etc. etc. It's in the yard at the yacht club which is a relief as I don't own a car so picking one up and towing it home would rely on help from friends.
Plan is to purchase a swinging mooring in the estuary on which I have to pay a modest fee to the council each year then out of the water mid-October to store in the yacht club yard during the winters. Mooring and storage combined about £500 a year, not too bad really.

Very nice. Tohatsu/Nissan are good units. Mariner and Mercury put their labels on them.

With no further posts following-up on his 26 August guest post, it appears that Arnac may have been put-off coming back to this forum and replying by the mindless tripe posted in response to his request by some of Thunderboat's irritating, but thankfully small, group of pointless, ill-intentioned, know-nothing half-wits.
I hope that isn't so, . . between me, the Tarleton lock-keepers (Mayors boatyard staff), the Douglas Boatyard, and Preston (Docks) Marina there's, in total, several lifetimes of experience and know-how at his and others disposal, . . including from me, operating commercials on the rivers Douglas and Ribble, loading bagged chemicals overside in Preston Docks for transhipping to ICI at Anderton (River Weaver) in the 1960's._____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Hello Arnac, . . and welcome to Thunderboat. I doubt there'll be any definitive answers from C&RT for you, or anyone else wanting to make the passage from Preston back to the Rufford Arm at Tarleton. But the good news is that with the joint co-operation of Preston Marina (Preston Docks), Douglas Marine (boatyard at Hesketh Bank on River Douglas), and Mayors Boatyard at Tarleton, who operate Tarleton Lock for C&RT, we can advise, schedule, and assist with passage from the Lancaster back onto the L&L's Rufford Arm at Tarleton for everyone who's been left stranded by the C&RT. God will be of considerable assistance too, . . he's still sending two tides up the Ribble every day, . . and the majority of them are big enough - 8.0 metres or more on the River Gauge at Preston Docks - to put enough water in the lower parts of Savick Brook for shallow draught canal boats, . . whatever nonsense the clowns at C&RT are saying to the contrary. Do you know roughly how many boats in total are wanting to get back from off the Lancaster before Winter ? With the Half-Tide Gate/Barrier at the low end of the semi-tidal section of Savick Brook out of use, it's very unlikely that any passages from Preston back to Tarleton will be possible without at least a one tide layover in either Preston Docks, or on a floating stage at Hesketh Bank on the River Douglas. Have the C&RT given any specific reasons, valid or otherwise, for limiting passage past the site of the breach at the aqueduct to seven days starting on 20 September ? Please call or e-mail if you would like more details, or any questions you'd like to have answered. You may well have read them already, but there are quite a few posts in this thread and others that you'll find informative and useful. I'll post links to them as soon as I've got time. This is the first image that came up when I searched Orkney Strikeliner 16+ so I guess this is the sort of thing (maybe older or newer model)? Looks good. Rog

Forgive my ignorance but what does 'complete with cuddy' mean ?
Is that the cover , as Google says a cuddy is 'a small room on a sea going boat' ?

Yes a cuddy is basically a cabin. They tend to be small, to allow maximum deck space for fishing and open, rather than enclosed by a door. Basically somewhere to shelter if it pisses down and a place to keep electronics, flares etc. reasonably dry.
The Orkneys are what's known as 'semi displacement' hulls. They will get on the plane, the one I'm buying will top out at around 20 knots, maybe 15 cruising with one person on board, with a 30hp engine. They aren't as quick as dory types which are basically almost flat bottomed. These will do in excess of 30 knots but generally require a bigger engine for top performance. More fuel is burned, more expensive to run etc. Also they tend to 'slam' into choppy seas giving an uncomfortable ride whereas the v shape at the bow of a semi displacement hull softens the ride. Semi displacements are considered the safer option, more capable in big seas. Overall the jury is out with many who expect to travel significant distances choosing the faster dories. I prefer the better safety and comfortable ride, and lower running costs of the semi displacement. The marks I'll fish are within around 8 miles of here, maximum, so I'm only looking at around a half an hour cruise in or out.

I also realised that I can mount twin trolling motors on the transom itself on the Taskmaster. One each side of the Honda.
Because it will be a pair of motors there is no need for them to be steerable. Fixed ahead so they don't contact the Honda. This is a better solution than the 360 pod drive because it can be done without interfering with the bottom of the Boat. Thus it is easily removed if it is a load of bollocks.
Underway the Honda itself will have a mild rudder effect even if it is not the propulsion unit and for manoovering having two screws will be brilliant anyway.
So it might all go swimmingly.
