Cruising across slapton yesterday. A couple of new bottom gates on two of the locks, but the top gates almost falling apart. No chance of seeing the towpaths, as the grass and reeds are 4ft plus high. Stepped off the boat at slapton lock landing and fell into a hole up to my groin. Twisted ankle and fucked back thanks to that. Couldn't see the hole owing to it being hidden by 2ft of grass. Horton lock is crumbling into the chamber, with chunks of brickwork missing. Replacing lengthsmen with office based digital marketing staff is beginning to have an effect on the state of the system. CRT income since 2012 will this year total one point three billion quid, not much of it seems to have gone into maintenance. Horton lock Sink hole at slapton.

Imagine what CRT’s insurance bill would be if everyone claimed for injuries...and who do you think will end up paying for it? I did a similar thing a couple of years ago on the South Oxford and twisted my ankle. It’s made me much more cautious when I step off a boat now. It doesn’t detract from Steve’s main point though which is that our canals are getting into a worse and worse state each year despite having a much bigger budget per mile than other water trusts like ANT.

So, if you are in a car crash and the driver of the other vehicle is what done it, you won't make a claim because the cost will be transferred to every other driver in the country? That's very considerate.

Something has to be done to stop this crap from CRT. Enough is enough I think. That hole is dangerous. The lock landings and facilities area should be maintained to a reasonably safe standard for public use. There was nothing to indicate it was there. A lengthsman would have probably picked it up and filled it in. I will be asking CRT for the last two length reports for that area. If my back is no better by Monday, I'll get an xray and decide from that. The paramedic wanted me to do that yesterday, but I declined. A surveyor friend has offered to have a look at the hole this morning, and furnish me with a written statement. I'll see how things are on Monday.

Well I hope that ankle improves quickly (and your back), must be bloody painful at the moment. I think it would be good if you can show any negligence, it might make CRT think a bit more seriously about maintenance. The danger of course is that elf and safety could be used as an excuse to shut down parts of the system....all under the guise of not having enough budget of course!

As I have previously stated, CRT have had an income of 1 point 4 billion quid since 2012. They spend 2.8 million quid per annum on staff company car cash. That's not the sign of a poor Ltd company.

This is all beginning to whiff of Marples and Beeching - take the money and run. I’m hoping it will get taken over by someone else who will run it more like a trust and get the public involved more in volunteering at ALL levels and roles. I’m sure there are some very experienced retired marketing experts out there for example! The lengthsman role could be achieved by providing the right people with a free mooring and some basic training. Many boaters could do basic lock maintence when they spot a problem. We can all cut the grass next to where we moor up. etc Our waterways need hands on effort...and I don’t mean on a keyboard like this...

This is all beginning to whiff of Marples and Beeching - take the money and run. And I don’t mean on a keyboard like this... Although I agree that hands on is a good option, I also feel the "keyboard" has its own voice, and has a part to play in sharing information. Obviously CRT sussed this early on, and have built a pr-digital marketing system that relies almost solely on keyboards.

But volunteers would have to be trained in writing a 10 page risk assessment before going anywhere near paddle gear with a greasy finger.

The danger of course is that elf and safety could be used as an excuse to shut down parts of the system....all under the guise of not having enough budget of course! Parts of the canal system closed before so it could easily happen again. Does not seem all that unlikely to me. It would be interesting to hear NigelMoore comment on this as he would probably know if CRT can in fact claim impecuniosity as a reason to close certain canal areas on safety grounds.

They cannot claim it as justification for legally closing them down. They don't need to, they can let it become de facto unusable. They can still be sued over such failure to maintain, impecuniosity is just the available defence.
