Go on,go on,go on-what does a volunteer look like ?🤔 They have CRT lifejackets and other CRT garb (T shirts, hats etc) on, but look too clean cut and retired-middle-class to be CRT labourers. Perhaps it is the avocado in their sandwiches that gives them away? But if this is a serious question, the answer is that it is obvious - well obvious to those who aren’t volunteers! And anyway, CRT don’t have any employees any more, they have all been sacked and languish at the dole centre, in favour of volunteers and contractors.

Paul has now given up being a volly-he always said that he was there as an extra bod,not to take someone's job.He felt that was no longer the case as C&RT employees were not being replaced. The final straw was when a group of full timers were stood chatting at Cambrian Wharf & 'asked' P to pick up the litter just outside that they'd walked over.P did, but that was it ! He does volly with the heritage boats, but bites his tongue when they try to tell him what to do at locks etc,not only does he have loads of experience but he is a qualified professional steerer. He just smiles when they give advice,I wouldn't be able to be so calm...😌

The Aston Jn pound (bottom of farmers bridge/top of Aston/top of Ashted) was drained last Sunday, and still seemed to be recovering a bit yesterday. A CRT chappie was herding some litter-picking volunteers around somewhere middle of Aston (very commendable too!) and mentioned to us that the pound between 2 locks and 3 locks up, was quite low. It always is of course, must be a bad leak somewhere. Anyway he said he would make sure we were OK. As it happened when we drained said lock, poor Telemachus was at a funny angle firmly bottomed out on something in the lock - the pound was perhaps a foot down. Not to worry, with no sign of CRT chappie I flushed Jeff out and then flushed him past the mud bank at the bywash exit, and he bumped and bounced off to the next lock. Whereupon we met said chappie again who had arrived by van. didn’t seem a huge point in doing that after we had got past the difficult bit! He was quite a nice bloke actually, but did volunteer (no pun intended) that CRT were getting rid of all their experienced staff and replacing them with contractors etc. Obviously this is a well known issue, but interesting to hear it is still in the minds of the few remaining CRT staff.

I've heard the same story from several CRT guys over the last year (as you know there are a few professionals still in the North)

I must admit I'm surprised by this, the 2 ladies who are usually involved with the hysterical boats are well hard !Perhaps they were blinded by your sparkly rivets.Mmmm, looking at Patty's piccy, perhaps not !!!😆 She had a full head of white hair, if that’s any clue. Anyway, I think she was probably “alright” but I do wish people wouldn’t shout orders at random strangers, panic mode or not. I’m sure she wouldn’t like it if I did that to her, and that surely is the relevant test of behaviour. Thinking about it, I have been boating since late 1960s and, as far as I can remember, I have never shouted at anybody to “SLOW DOWN”. Maybe she was having a bad day.. U know ...and u just happened to be there for her to let off steam ....That is a noble act of yours not to respond so she could hear and make her day even worse...

Nick is well known, in concentric circles, for his nobility and quiet, modest disposition

Maybe she knew Nick would be moaning about her in TB so she gave him something to moan about.

I thought the volockie season ended end of Oct, but it seems not. We encountered a volockie on the Curdworth flight. There is a bit of a volockie hut thing there. I think at this time of the year they are mostly doing minor maintenance/litter picking / painting etc. But the chap stopped what he was doing and went ahead to prepare a few locks for us. Which was great. No bossing, no mansplaining how we should be operating the boats/locks, no officious interference at all. Lovely! If only all volockies could be like that! Leyther, take note. Exactly how I like to assist. I thought you preferred to set your own though, was he not stealing your licence fee? Good to see you describe your writings as dross too.

Well it’s a pity your colleagues the Wigan Trolley Dollies don’t see it that way. I don’t have a problem with volunteers setting ahead - I can take it or leave it. What I have a problem with is volunteers often with minimal actual boating experience, trying to take charge and issue orders, in compensation for their small stature, tiny genitals and other general insecurities, micro-managing trivial details in order to make out they are SO important and big up their role. All of which you would understand having read my various missives on the subject with an open mind, as opposed to a defensive one.

Good argument! Three years into volunteering and as far as I'm aware there has been just one complaint regarding the Wigan volunteers. That's quite a minority! Missives? Dross.

That's quite a minority! Missives? Dross. Probably because CRT don’t have a valid complaints mechanism. 3 months to get any sort of response is hardly an effective process. And of course the Wigan Trolley Dolley facebook page disallows any dissent. A technique they learnt from the Chinese no doubt.

That's quite a minority! Missives? Dross. I was not looking for an argument, I was merely pointing out that in my view, you're a twunt. You keep popping in to merely wind up nick norman, no other reason I can see. This serves to highlight the fact in my mind that you're just being a twunt. 😊
