They missed a bit ... shouting inappropriate orders to boaters, deliberately not assisting a lady in order to make a point, shoving a 78 year old man out of the way to make another point. Well Nick, that's a little disappointing, I reckon the red mist on the day has clouded your memory. The first point is your opinion which is fine. The other two points are blatant lies written to reinforce your view. The very suggestion that any volunteer would "shove" anyone is preposterous.

A volunteer lock keeper broke my hand left index finger. How come he didn't break both fingers in the sign you were giving him?

They missed a bit ... shouting inappropriate orders to boaters, deliberately not assisting a lady in order to make a point, shoving a 78 year old man out of the way to make another point. Well Nick, that's a little disappointing, I reckon the red mist on the day has clouded your memory. The first point is your opinion which is fine. The other two points are blatant lies written to reinforce your view. The very suggestion that any volunteer would "shove" anyone is preposterous. First of all can I mention that as far as I’m aware, you weren’t actually there. Or were you? I think you said you weren’t. If so you are not in a position to call me a liar. Not that I mind, but it reflects badly on you because everyone can see you are just making it up. This is reiteration, but the sequence of events was that, having traversed the first half of the flight very satisfactorily and enjoyably with another boat comprising a profoundly deaf lady with zero experience, and a guy with a little experience but a long time ago, on a boat the lady had just bought, we then encountered the volockies. We were about 5yds from the lock entrance (both boats coming in together) when suddenly I became aware of a volockie above me on the footbridge, hand up in a STOP sign and shouting “STOP!”. I continued into the lock as there was no reason not to. The other chap unfortunately took the command at face value and a bit of mayhem ensued. I make no apology for remonstrating with the volockies in no uncertain terms, aka I was not polite to them. Not without reason, of course. At some point the LH gate which wasn’t fully open by a 9” or so, was fully opened. I think you said that the volockie had been standing between the beam and the edge, although I can’t recall seeing that. Incredibly stupid if true. It seems that the volockies didn’t want the gate fully opened because it sticks a bit. After both boats were in the lock the deaf lady, having closed the RH gate, crossed over to the LH gate but couldn’t budge it. From my “vantage point” in the bottom of the lock I could see the 2 volockies were engaging Jeff’s 78 year old dad in conversation (he is easily distracted!) just a few feet away from the struggling lady. They were facing the lady, Jeff’s dad has his back to her. One at least, and possibly both, glanced at me with a smirk to check that I had noticed that the lady couldn’t close the gate. This apparently was the point - the gate tended to stick a bit and their micro-managing solution was to not fully open the gate. They wanted to ensure I was aware of their righteousness and my folly at attempting to bring two boats in side by side. I called up to Jeff’s dad to ask him to help the lady. He then started moving towards the beam. After that I briefly looked away and I wasn’t particularly aware of the exact sequence of events, but I next saw the two volockies making a great show of bouncing the gate, and continuing to bounce the gate even though it had started moving after the first bounce. A second or two later, Jeff appeared having been helping the down-going boat in the previous lock. With the arrival of Jeff I felt reassured and knew that he would sort things out. That was the sum of my first hand experience. However after the event and un-prompted, Jeff - who is a much nicer person than I am and totally non-confrontational - volunteered that as he had approached the lock he saw the lady struggling, he then saw his dad amble over to help her but just before, or as he reached the balance beam (just a few steps), the two volockies pushed past him and started to operate the gate. Whether there was actual physical contact is unknown, but the body language and very close proximity made his dad get out of the way even if there was no actual contact. His take was that they wanted to ensure that it wasn’t demonstrated that Jeff’s dad and the lady could close the gate - they wanted it to seem like only their volockie-superhero special powers could get the gate closed. So in fact you are not accusing me of lying, you are accusing my husband Jeff of lying. So what little regard I had for you has now evaporated into zero. Jeff spent 22 years looking after people with myeloma, leukaemia etc and gave it his all. Perhaps you will retract your insult but if not, I really hope you come to a fitting end such as a miserable, painful and early death from some particularly nasty haematological illness. And soon.

No Nick, I'm not accusing your husband of lying, I'm accusing you. No, I wasn't there and from your position on your boat inside the lock you could not possibly have sight of the volunteers but I've spoken and continue to speak with them and their account certainly does not tally with yours. Thanks also for your wishes for my future health which unfortunately seems to have manifested upon my brother, just missed off the acute bit. What a charmer.

Words written when angry can be very unpleasant ...waiting before hitting that post button is something many could consider.... Incidents happen and we all have our own perceptions drawn from what we see and how we judge what we see. Wishing ill on people is something that always makes me feel uncomfortable...its very playgroundish......

If they had been in the mood Nick suggests, did as Nick suggests, then would they have admitted their errant behaviour or would they have whitewashed the event in the retelling. Shame you didn't have a gopro. It's been the downfall of another self important little man lately. leyther, get the wfc gopros, then they'll have to behave, or be completely innocent.

Please apologise to your brother for my bad aim - I promise to be more accurate in future. Anyway, the power of my voodoo dolls aside, your post makes it clear to everyone who has ever steered a boat through a wide lock (as opposed to having a static boat and just putting other people’s boats through locks) that you either have no idea what you are talking about, or you are lying or at least blindly accepting, to cover up the misdeeds of your peers. I suppose you are not that far from hillsborough so that sort of behaviour is probably endemic to the locale. I was standing on the stern of my boat on the rh side of the lock. The volockies were standing on the LH side of the lock. With the gate open, the balance beam is right at the edge of the lock so of course one can see anyone in the vicinity and especially anyone trying to close the gate. As they move further away from the edge you will lose sight of their feet, knees etc but they have to be a fairly long way away before their heads are lost to sight. Especially when their heads are inflated by their overpowering sense of self-importance. Perhaps you should pause to ask yourself why I am “lying”? You can see from my writings that I give praise where it is due, including to volockies, but also call out bad behaviour where it is due. Do you think I just decided to give the WFC a hard time for no reason, whilst at other times praising eg the Lapworth volockies? Do you have a hypothesis as to why that might be? Of could Occam’s razor be right (as usual) and in fact I am just reporting what happened.

Unpleasant and unworthy of you Telemachus ... you're much better than that Rog I wondered how long it would be. No, if someone insulted Jane I doubt you would forgive easily. Or maybe you wouldn’t give a shit, who knows? People have been murdered for calling someone’s spouse a liar. I am not proposing to do that (it would be a bit silly with this in the public domain) but I can wish the perpetrator an unpleasant future.

I would trust that people here could fairly judge what was said and draw their own conclusions ... I would protest and defend ... I would not wish painful terminal illness on anyone. But I'm a 'holier than thou virtue signaller' who has a family member and close friend currently suffering painful, terminal ill health. Rog
