As for the boating the problem I could foresee is that of carrying out emergency maintenance. Things like dealing with dry pounds. Is a sole worker allowed to do this sort of job or does it require a gang? If it's more than one worker then can they get there achieving social distancing? Would they have to use two vehicles? The roadwork gangs are working but then roads are every so slightly more important than the canals. I witnessed the CRT supervising grass cutting here last week, it struck me as odd that there were three men , two brand new hired vans and one CRT van, now i think back, I realise it is the only way to keep a gang of workers socially distanced, I am still trying to work out why a local police van had two officers on board, i can only assume they are living as a household, seems unlikely, but what other explanation unless they are both immune.

Grass cutting not essential.
Policing essential.

Like most workers ... I guess they're getting on with life ... doing what they have to ... using common sense, and good hygeine.

My lad for instance, 9-5 as usual. Took them about half a morning to put sensible measures for distancing into his office/factory. Business continuing soundly. They make and sell cash counting machines. Some customers very busy, some disappeared(hopefully not forever). Cash seems to be getting bad press of late, here in the U.K. anyway. His export orders are well up though, so it’s all balancing out ok. Daughter works for Next, she works from home at the mo. Their sales are down, but nowhere near as bad as expected. She misses the buzz of her office, but not the commute.

Have you spoken to your marina management yet ianali ? I was considering it's one thing for C&RT to say 'visit your boat but no cruising' but marinas may not want loads of visitors. Can't see a problem provided people keep distancing and maintain good hygeine, but I understand some marinas are effectively locked up. Anyone else been in touch with marina staff about visiting ? Rog

Rog An mp on lunchtime tv asserted that travel to second homes..caravans etc is still non essential and not permitted. CRT have as usual made up their own interpretation of the guidelines. Yet again proving that their stupidity has no bounds.

Rog Not spoken with them. I will ring midweek. They are good people, I will be happy to accept their views on my visiting our boat. If the navigations were open I’d normally just go cruising untill Novemberish. However that’s not going to happen right now is it! We also have another, small detail to deal with before we go out long term anyway. Also we usually winter moor the boat , then take a few weeks away in the sun, so many changes ahead isn’t there. I have spoken this morning with our liveaboard boat neighbour. I asked if he would have a problem if we were to visit our boat. He said not. He also told me that Ali’s flowers are blooming, Ali rather surprised as she can’t remember leaving any on board. Now I’m wondering did I remove all the cheese etc from the fridge?

CRT have modified this mornings statement. canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-the-waterways/safety-on-our-waterways/coronavirusWhilst MP's argue about interpretation it's not surprising CRT have the same problem.

No they haven't, the statement still suggests owners can visit their boats, which is specifically against government guidelines. No MPs are being vague about this.

They have changed some of the wording which affects people wishing to visit their boat and back tracked on the cruising (but not long distance) advice. Strangely I've not received an updated email yet! On MP's being inconsistent with the rules, this is entertaining even though I cant stand Piers...

Slightly odd wording about towpath use.
"As more people return to work and are encouraged to avoid public transport, we could see an increase in the use of towpaths. Please keep moving, don’t congregate and stand aside to allow others to pass, using the full width of the towpath."
...Please keep moving, don't congregate and stand aside to allow others to pass...
Hmm so they saying do NOT give way to others (eg cyclists) or DO give way?
It is impossible to stand aside while keeping moving.
I find it encouraging that they mention cyclists should consider looking for alternatives for their exercise.
Slightly odd that they have steered clear of the elephant in the room which is high speed commuter cyclists, which are liable to increase in numbers in a big way.

Did the government place boats in the same class as second homes? Are motorhomes not allowed to be driven ? Is the Pope catholic? Did I leave cheese on me boat.
