It's definitely the scummiest section of canal I've ever been on. I wouldn't be sorry if they infilled it and built branches of Kwik-Fit and Costa Coffee on it.

While they are at it perhaps they could insert the scrotes into the wet cement.

'They' jolly well should, Patty. I'm always a bit shocked to see just how shallow the canals really are. I wonder how far you would sink in the (foetid stinking) mud?

Thanks to EU rules dredging is monsterously expensive so although CRT might be responsible the extra cost of treating dredgings as hazardous waste must be severely limiting.
On the A&C the shallow depth is restricting the loads carried by the tanker up to Rotherham and on the rivers its as bad. Transhipping from York to Goole is severely limited by sand bars near Naburn.
On the river Trent I was told that a couple of weeks ago someone waded across the river at Hazleford.
Last year on the Fossdyke we dragged the bottom up to Lincoln with 4 foot draught (meant to be 5 foot navigational depth)
Where there is a decent current flow such as on tidal sections some help can be by "ploughing" with a tug but that's not possible with slow flows.
Out of the EU we can only hope for some sensible regulatory changes that are specific to British waterways rather than the EU's "one size fits all"

Really John, you actually entertain that notion? And you seem such a down-to-earth chap (for round here) so much of the time. Pigs will sooner fly.

If it was only the useless bunch at CRT I would agree but there are a hell of a lot of other authorities and big companies having major problems because of the hazardous waste label on dredgings and this includes Councils, Port authorities and other river authorities ..... a lot of muscle there so possibly .... just possibly ..... enough pressure

when I came down that bit last August, there was a moped, vertically wedged in the mud - I checked in case Stabby was lurking somewhere and had parked it in the cut but no sign of him.
It really is a crappy area - I was asked if I'd do a trip up and over for a bloke who doesn't want to take his OWN boat up there... I declined as I have no intention of venturing up there ever again. Oddly though, I don't find the 9 at the bottom too overbearing - even on my own last year... just took it steady, employed the Spanish windlass a couple of times and got to the top in a couple of hours.

You 'working boatmen' may be different, but as a leisure boater, I don't intend visiting an area where I cannot relax and enjoy the journey, stopping more or less as I like ... it seems like looking for trouble.

Why not just napalm all of eastern Manchester? It's the only language they understand.

Just resurecting this thread because of a picture on Farcebook. This is Hazleford lock on the River Trent, I mentioned someone had waded the river near there in the post above but this is crazy

I can see a wisp of luscious black hair under the water - is she standing on Stabby's Shoulders?
