Having travelled around on a canal boat visiting towns and cities accessible to us, we realised viewing places as a tourist was very different to viewing them as a resident.
We decided to return home and visit Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley and try to see them with fresh 'tourist' eyes.
Sheffield was quite impressive ... the others not so much, although Donny's trying hard, and the development around the station and into the old Arndale is pretty flash.

Yes, I remembered it as I joined Canalworld in 2013. 2015 was the June we went north through 'Stoke-on-Trent' (whatever it is, as it's 6 towns attached, right?) and people on the towpath seemed quite pleasant. We came south through SOT (railway station's code) July 2018 - all very pleasant. I have a warm feeling for Stoke, not sure why; Manchester is a bit grotty but we have criss-crossed the region and no problems. If it does get out of hand, just nuke it (Manchester, not Stoke). We also like Stoke. Found all the people we spoke with there to be friendly and helpful. I was offered a can of cider by a chap, was around 8.30am... he did close the lock for us as well. Only dubious looking bloke we saw there was wearing crocs...ginger guy he was. Knocking on a bit I’ve heard. We have moored next to the lake and by the museum without problems.

Rog Fair play, but personally I see little connection between the architecture of a place and its soul. You could dress Manchester up with gold plated buildings and the best local transport system in the world, very little would change. People are different wherever you go. The way they are is complex, based on a multitude of factors and events that span centuries. Dressing something up might appeal more to visitors, but it makes very little difference to those who live there. Perhaps it might do over time, but that time will be significant.

We've left it once overnight on the moorings by the aqueduct ... opposite the flats. That's our preferred mooring for Congleton when we visit We've left the boat a night or two at the bottom of the Macc opposite Heritage boats, near the Rising Sun pub, away from towns. Rog

Cheers rog, google maps shows it close to the station and other boats moored there. I think the moorings closest to the station are 48 hours. Opposite the flats just south of the aqueduct is also 48 hours, but you can sometimes get on the far end of them, room for 2 boats maybe. Failing that there's the stretch north of the aqueduct, closer to the station. This is mostly shallow, you'll need a gangplank. Just before the aqueduct the water deepens, you can get in the side with a 2ft draft. I always moor here, room for 2 or 3 boats, not very popular, but quite nice, and safe, as far as I know.

Cheers rog, google maps shows it close to the station and other boats moored there. We left our boat last summer in Congleton for 3 nights. Moored just past the aqueduct as you head north. I like congleton.

The Witch said come and look: from our kitchen window we can see the sun setting - it's 1110pm now. It sets at 2345, and rises 0301 - and we will be able* to see it rise from the same window, which is northward-facing of course. *unlikely to be up at that time! Not my pic, but gives you the general idea of the Midnight Sun.

The station is just a walk up the canal from the aqueduct ... there's also an Enterprise car hire base in the town.
We like Congleton too.

Yes Congleton is nice. Decent array of shops and pubs, friendly enough people, low crime. Only drawback, it's a mile or so from the canal to the town.
