Talking of scrotes, we are due to hit stoke on Trent next Saturday night/Sunday morning.. what would be the best options to getting on the caldon, have heard of scrotes loitering with murder in mind?
Moor up just south of stoke then hoof it early doors is my thinking?

Whatever makes you feel comfortable is best. But we've moored at the Caldon junction many times over the past 15 years without incident ... on the main line and on the Caldon near the museum and services. I would definitely recommend once on the Caldon you don't moor for the night until well clear of Stoke. Mr Stabby can probably recommend a first night mooring spot. Westport lake is a pleasant mooring if you'd rather not stay in Stoke ... less than an hour to the Caldon from there. Rog ETA Have never left the boat overnight unattended there, my comments relate to being onboard.

I was born in Manchester. Saddens me to say it, but it's a hell hole. I'm struggling to think of a worse city that I've visited, and I've been around a bit. It tries to 'big itself' on football, music heritage and a burgeoning gay scene but this does little to offset the violent nature of its people, their arrogance and their disregard for anything that doesn't either belong to them, or directly affect them.
I'd rather be Welsh.

We love spending time in Manchester ... shame they've made it difficult now for visiting boats.

If you cherry pick where you go, and when you go there, it's very much like any other city. Doing this doesn't reveal the true character of anywhere though. I was brought up with it, it took me many years of living away to realise how bad the place is.

Stokies are generally nice people. It's a very poor city though, so there will be exceptions.

Moor up just south of stoke then hoof it early doors is my thinking? Moorings by the junction are fine for an overnight stop (plenty worse). Milton looked fine to me (plus a couple of other points before there), I think some of the reputation is out of date now. Going south from the junction on the T&M, the moorings around the Plume of Feathers at Trentham seemed fine to leave a boat - you might even see Morrissey if you need a bit of cheering up

I seem to remember it was Moomin Papa (Simon) from CWDF who travelled on the Caldon through Stoke and, as it was raining, moored opposite a railway line embankment which appeared to be in countryside. He wasn't aware there was a council housing estate behind the embankment, and shortly after mooring began to be heavily stoned by youths. As they would have an inexhaustible supply of missiles on the lines, he decided to move ... he was hit in the face with a stone causing injury and breaking his glasses. It's the only really unpleasant boating story I have heard directly from the guy experiencing it ... whilst it was simply wrong place, wrong time I certainly think it is worth getting beyond Engine lock as Mr Stabby suggests. The incident was several years ago (7 to 10 ?) and isn't typical ... I don't mean to put you off the canal. Rog

It's still worth a visit in my view ... just less visitor mooring spaces in Castlefield. Outside Trafford Centre's a good spot too ... that's worth a visit Rog

Came back from fishing the windscreen was smashed and one of the railways couplings from above was standing proud on my bonnet, the lower bit having pierced it.

That reminds me Clinton Cool of a story a lady boater told me several years ago. She'd left her wreck of an old car by the King's Head pub on Atherstone locks and several days later, cycled back to move the car to her next mooring. The car roof had been flattened to below seat height by people jumping up and down on it (from the footprints on the roof). The car was written off by the insurance. Wrong place, wrong time ... we've always found Atherstone a great place to moor. Rog
